I respectfully demur. The age profile of the existing bench is such that there aren’t likely to be any further vacancies for some time. This is well known in legal circles around town. A new selection exercise will likely excite fresh interest, and produce a strong field.

Magistrates play a pivotal role in our legal system. It’s vital that the best person(s) be selected. Cost is a secondary consideration, especially when a youngish appointee can potentially serve for 20 years or more.

He was the only Magistrate who had enough balls to actually sentence people to imprisonment.
