This one appeared on Friday after I’d checked out of reality.

Simon Corbell has announced a three month gun amnesty.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Simon Corbell, today declared a firearms amnesty as part of a campaign to promote compliance with Firearms legislation in the ACT.“The government is strongly committed to firearms regulation that promotes the fact that it is a privilege, not a right, to own a firearm.” Mr Corbell said “We also want to make certain, only those who can demonstrate genuine and responsible use of a firearm should be able to own and use firearms.”The amnesty will operate for three months between 1 March 2009 and 31 May 2009 and is timed to coincide with a NSW firearms amnesty. The ACT amnesty will allow people to hand in illegal firearms with no questions asked.Under the amnesty:
    – People who are not licensed to own firearms but currently have unregistered firearms in their possession, will be able to surrender them to any police station without penalty; and
    – People who currently have a licence or permit, but have unregistered firearms in their possession will be able to register those firearms without penalty.

    Anyone feel safer?

A ‘friend’ has decided to put away the things of his youth and hand in a selection from his small armoury.

The advice from the local police station is DO NOT just wander around the landscape with your firearm. DO put it in an obscuring bag. Do remove the bolt. Do feel free to drop in your ammunition at the same time. Proceed directly to your nearest police station.

I imagine it would be embarrassing to have to report a stolen unlicenced rifle.

I always wanted a lever action shotgun. Ever since seeing terminator 2. And according to Wikipeadia, they are even legal here.

Yes, they are legal. Pump actions are legal too, however in this case, you do need to prove a genuine need.

Hippies.

When does the open season on hippies start here?

Whatever time Gormon House markets starts. heh heh…….Groovy

I very much doubt it.

Rules against that kind of thing didn’t really help Harvey Milk much though.

Is she allowed to take it into their government building? Cause that is truly scary.

I think you are right p1.

Only slightly related but oh well. I found out recently that Dianne Feinstein (A Californian Democratic Senator) who has one of the most pro gun control voting records in the US Senate, conceal carries a .38 revolver.

It’s like a whole different world.

Throw down your guns! Don’t be so reckless.

Thank you. Thank you very much ….

My understanding is you can’t register a Pump Action unless you are some sort of commercial shooter, presumably, such a person uses the gun enough that the convenience of not having to reload so often is sufficient justification.

A traditional single or double barrelled shotgun can be obtain “relativity” easily for sport or rabbit hunting. In fact, a quick look at the AFP website makes it look like only pump action and self loading shotguns are excluded from Category A, so leaver action should be fine. That is not to say there isn’t some small print in the legislation somewhere that says you can only have one if you drive a stage coach…

Category A firearms

This category applies to:

* air rifles
* rimfire rifles other than self loading
* shotguns other than pump action or self loading
* shotgun and rimfire rifle combinations.

Self Defence is expressly forbidden as a ‘genuine need’ in the legislation. I guess you could try hunting or possibly become a sporting shooter (there are some shotgun events).

The problem I think you’d face trying to successfully register a pump action or lever action is that you’d have to show that you couldn’t use a ‘lesser shotgun’ for the job. I’m not sure if there are any pump events (I doubt it). Maybe for shooting wild pigs (which are apparently quite dangerous)?

Given time i could prove a genuine need for this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boys_Anti-tank_Rifle I saw one for sale in QLD 2 years back for $1500. It is a shame that you cannot get ammo for them anymore.

Not to be confused with the pink Girls Anti tank rifle.

Stupid Stupid Stupid… If you’ve got an unregistered firearm there should be a permanent amnesty on voluntarily handing it in.

I cannot be stuffed digging them up again.

Ramblingted – I think it’s more for the circumstances where, after the gun law overhaul in the late ’90s people retained guns that are now illegal. The amnesty allows them to surrender them without the possibility of being charged with possession of an illegal firearm for the intervening period.

Oh, I see what they mean…so anyone with unregistered firearms, and no licence, can come to the foyer of their local cop shop, and give them to the people who have licences..and get them registered…oh bugger, I’m having a Lealiifano..

“People who currently have a licence or permit, but have unregistered firearms in their possession will be able to register those firearms without penalty”.

Isn’t there a “fit and proper person” test applied to gun licences…and if you have been salting away unregistered firearms (perhaps for that late night cash withdrawal from the local servo), shouldn’t that disqualify you automatically from having a licence?
