Simply Slabs Timber on the side of the road

I’d never heard about the Wood Slab guy before reading about him on RiotACT. So I was pretty surprised to see a truck sitting on the side of the road on my way to work this morning covered in slabs of timber.

I stopped in and had chat with Paul Van Den Heuvel about what he does.

He’s been bringing timber up to Canberra for 18 years now (even more surprising that I haven’t seen him), but this is the first time he’s set himself up at the end of Bindubi Street at the bottom of Cook (he’s there until Sunday).

He brings up a selection of what he calls heirloom timber, as it is something you’ll pass down through the ages.

Slimply Slabs is based out of Bodalla on Potato Point Road and Paul operates his own mill and only deals in reclaimed timber. He brings the truck upto Canberra every fortnight with a selection of timber.

Types of timber available: Red Gum, Ironbark, Woolly-butt, Black Butt, Blood wood, box, River Red Gum, Red and Blonde Malley, Steel Wood, Spotted Gum, and Karri.

Doing everything from step treads for the garden path, to deck posts and boardroom tables upto 4m X 1.5m, also good for student wood working projects. He says its about half the price of laminex for a comparison.

He also has a mobile mill so you can mill your own slab of timber upto 1.8m wide if you have a large fallen tree in the back yard that would look great as a coffee table.

For something a bit different, Paul was telling me how his family have managed to cultivate an evergreen version of a deciduous hazelnut tree. So anyone any forestry students from Toad Hall who want to put their past learnings to work may be interested in what this has to offer.

Contact details are: Paul Van den Heuvel, 0410 293 377, http://www.simplyslabs.com.au/

Go along for a chat and have a look at what he has to offer. Tell him you heard he was a good looking rooster on RiotACT and I’m sure he’ll look after you.

[Disclaimer RiotACT was not paid for this, and I’m not getting any sort of commission or special discount for this, but I am looking to get a new top for the kitchen table.]

Paul from Simply Slabs, located in Bodalla on the Southcoast of NSW is back at Bindubi st. in Belconnen with his array of timber slabs and burls THIS WEEKEND!

He provides Australian hardwood timber slabs for tables, benchtops, furnishings, mantle pieces, stair cases or whatever the imagination allows.

He specialises in River and Forest Red Gum, but also has the following species:
stringy bark, iron bark, spotted gum, Mahogany, silky oak, yellow and red box.

All of his timber is professionally cut and sustainably sourced, no green trees are felled ensuring animal habitats are maintained.

For any enquiries or jobs with specific dimensions don’t hesitate to contact Paul on 0410293377.

Well I got my kitchen table top piece of red river gum and with what was left of it I’ll be doing a coffee table top too.
Will post photos of the progress as I sand it back, oil it and fit it to the table frame.

Paul was saying that there might be some around from Watson high school who remember him as Punk, probably 30 years ago.

well thanks for the storey Che, I ended up going to check out what Paul had and walk away the proud owner of a beautiful piece of red river gum burl and ordered a few pieces for his next trip back to canberra, so thanks again.

rosebud: It does say in the article that he only deals in reclaimed timber.

Best to make sure the bottom sheet is taut over the mattress and well tucked in. Fitted sheets help but professional bed makers call that cheating.

Smooth out the doona and make sure you fluff the pillows. 🙂

hospital corners ftw

Aren’t red river gums endangered?

And don’t forget the hospital corners, and a 20 cent piece to test the ‘tightness’ of the finished product!

Oh barking toad I almost spat my drink all over the monitor, good one!

Hummmm that’s not too expensive for something like that I guess. I might see if he can do a deal for me I want to make a bed.

-does any one know how to make a bed?

Thanks for the great post che.

My partner and I bought a river red gum slab from him to make a pot rack for the kitchen with. It was about 1.8m long by 0.5m wide and paid less than $100. Its turned into a beautiful peice of work. Given its beauty and the time and effort we put into making it, it will definitly become a family heirloom

I didn’t really have the time to have a chat with the guy. But it’s good to know where the wood comes from.

depends what you call expensive?? some of the slabs in the pic’s have numbers on them that’s the price. If you are looking to buy don’t go with any less than a few hundred. The 3.6 slab I got was $180 only because it had huge crack down the center and he couldn’t sell it he had $480 on it. But it’s worth every dollar in my eyes every piece is an original and if care for will last for your grandkids kids. we have 4 piece’s so far desk , coffee table + side coffee table and a clock, all came from different sellers.

If anyone is looking to knock up a new kitchen bench, i think this guy could be your winner.

are they expensive?

not sure if this is the same guy from hall markets (he’s not there any more), but I brought a slab approx 3.6meters for a desk and love it I’ve been looking for another piece to make a side table out of so thanks for the new location.
