Sister cities?

Recently, large and attractive new signs have been erected at the entrances to Canberra welcoming people to Ngunnawal country, and listing Canberra’s sister cities (Beijing and Nara) and friendship city (Dili).

I am wondering, however, what happened to our two other sister cities, which I thought were Versailles and Atlanta?

Does anyone know if they have been officially dropped, or are we just ignoring them, or have they been forgotten? I know our relationship with Versailles took a hammering when the French started testing nuclear bombs again at Mururoa Atoll, but I thought we had patched things up again. As for Atlanta, I don’t know.

[ED – But wasn’t it nice to at least see the forest of signage consolidated?]

Since “President” Stanhope is so keen on saving the Greek and Turkish Cypriots from one another, how long before Nicosia becomes a Sister City?

Queanbeyan?

Typical of the over correction of “sexism” … where’s my fkn brother city?!

If ratepayers knew there were periodic junkets to Versaille by municipal clerks, then there would be outrage. So of course they don’t advertise the linkage (if there is one? who knows? who ever will?)

You could FOI it if you’re really hard up for thrills.

What happened to the parantheses around one of the ‘n’s in Ngun(n)awal? Looks like the Waradjiri cousins won out!

When I visited Nara recently, there didn’t seem to be any reciprocal signage there – I should have brought my own sign and planted it.

Do the new signs have sideways writing, per the current fad? (I haven ‘t seen these ones yet, but I’m getting a sore neck reading all the other new sideways signs! I suppose they thought it was cool and arty to do this??)

Favouritism – it happens in so many families.

*sigh*

Obviously Beijing, Nara and Dili are the favourites. Atlanta is not so cute now that she is older, Versailles has blackened the good family name and poor little San Francisco was an unwanted accident.

The main benefit is the provision of junket opportunities to civic leaders.

But it also gives schools the chance to run inane activities.

I’ve never understood the “Sister City” concept, what is the point?

apparently we are also sister city to sanfrancisco and have been for over 40 years.
