As promised the Navy’s Squirrel helicopters were putting on a show over Lake Burley Griffin this afternoon to get themselves ready for the big show tomorrow night for Skyfire.

And then the Army fire their cannons and marched around a bit.

At half an hour it was a much longer display than we usually get with these things.

squirrels and the high court squirrels and carillon cannon fire

Those guns don’t look elevated enough to bring down any of the choppers.

Given the currently strained relationship between the ADF and their minister, perhaps they are aimed at the house on the hill.

Heh, nice one. Personally, I’m hoping Smith finally gives Defence the reaming it’s needed for so long. Too much brass doing either nothing or a piss-poor job and thinking they can all be a law unto themselves in how they spend our money. Hopefully he can find a way to rotate them all through tours of Afghanistan.

I agree 100%, and that numpty 1/2 star who complained to the media. They expect respect, then how about they show some to the civvy workers also, pinheads.

I saw the Arty boys beside the lake yesterday. As an ex gun bunny I used to hate firing salutes, love watching them now though.

‘…the Arty boys’? Was that sundry male things from You Are Here? Did they read poetry en masse or do humorous rap or plant some bulbs or something?

(And JB, that lovely photo of the two helicopters by the Carillon; I assume they’re Bell ‘copters?)

Aerospatiale AS350B’s otherwise known as Squirrels. Used to work on them in my RAAF days…

I heartily recommend that any helicopter lovers set up on the Anzac Pde side of the lake tomorrow, as that’s where most of the action was directed. I was taking photos over in Reconciliation Place (I can actually see myself, in speck form, in the second photo) and had very few opportunities to get decent close-up looks from that side.
