The Centenary website has the news that Skywhale is once again taking to the skies over this weekend just in case you haven’t had enough of it yet.

Centenary of Canberra’s latest commission, Patricia Piccinini’s The Skywhale will take to Canberra’s skies again this Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 May.

The hot-air balloon sculpture will fly over Canberra on Saturday morning between 7am and 9am, and will be tethered at the lawns outside Questacon on Sunday between 7am and 9am.

Weather permitting of course.

Alright, since everybody else is doing it…. here’s my entry:

There once was a Skywhale that floated by
Trying to ascend into the capital’s sky
She was full of hot air
And her bits added flair
But she was too top heavy to fly.

Mine – not a strictly a limerick I know, but anyway…

Breakfast radio wants me to be witty,
And pen them a sweet little ditty,
’bout art in the sky,
that the gummint did buy,
that possessed ten pendulous titties!

Now some in the public were shitty,
Saying the cost of this was a pity!
But that whale did fly,
Despite the hue and the cry,
About just what it meant for their city!

And while the citizens might be divided,
They’ll find criticism’s misguided,
You might find it perverse,
But there’s no need to curse,
Just wonder as you lift your eyes skyward!

And for the first time in the city which paid for it. How much, per minute, will we have paid for this flight? If it’s up there for 3 hours that’s $1,666.00 per minute. Bargain!!

Except for last weekend – you may have noticed the odd article/post/whinge/photo/video about it here or there

Me too! Perhaps we should post our efforts here? I would have loved to have seen the 300 entries…I’m guessing there was quite a bit of lyrical waxing over Skywhale’s endowments.

Same.

This was my entry:

They say Canberra is full of hot air,
Our Skywhale sure needs its fair share,
Oh please let me ride,
‘Neath its multi-breasted hide,
And get a return for the taxpayers’ fare.

I’m incredibly envious of the limerick competition winner…

It should do a fly-over of the dogs at the RSPCA million paws walk on Sunday, they’d go ballistic at it.
