Is it just my partner and i or do other people suffer from certain canberra nights of no sleep … such as last night .

I know there are plenty of clever people here who can give perfectly rational answers to probelms (- eg swooping birds ! – top video -)

Its not a heat problem – was not hot last night.. but a kind of heaviness to the air … been here 3yrs – and been aware of this for 3yrs ..

Come on ….. why why why ????

seems like people are not giving their body enough work to do so as to get exhausted :p

I often have problems sleeping in Canberra, specifically the chap I rent off has his computer desk 1 very thin wall from where I sleep and thinks its tolerable to play his game while shouting to his friends on voice chat…

I can no longer use ear plugs as repeated ear infections have led to an apparently permenant case of tinitus in my left ear.

Time to move ?

A very large speaker pushed ‘noise-side’ against that very thin with some VERY loud music at a time when he is normally asleep…

Also canberra has less things to do and people here don’t like doing much and are conservative, plus we got less tv channels and etc.

Hmm I think that might be a reflection on you and your narrow definition of entertainment rather than Canberra. You do realise you complain about people not doing much and the lack of tv channels in the same breath?

lol i’m not complaining, im just stating that canberra has less attractions than other cities, shops close earlier and not alot of people like to go out ont he weekday here in Canberra. I’m just trying to point out even on the tele, Canberra is limited. If you don’t tire yourself out you’ll have a harder time trying to fall asleep.

Yes, unless you are near the phone jack and can secretly unplug the cord from the wall to shut him up.

Dry air is harder to breath as it dries out our mucus membranes. Try using a humidifier/evaporative cooler in your room at night.

yes – i agree – i think this is the issue – thanks for all comments – caffeine and lack of exercise of course is a factor to sleep problems but this was not my problem – its definately air quality ..

do you think that the level of dust in the air here in canberra is also contributing ??

I slept fine last night! 😀
Probably because I made the wife sleep in the spare room… (She’s a regular sleep talker/walker)

Not sure about heaviness in the air but our urban services have been very active over the last couple of weeks mowing grass. Could be a minor allergy that is keeping you awake.
I never could sleep in Canberra in Spring but now with the help of some legal medication i sleep like a baby.

I couldn’t sleep eigther last night, but that’s not unusualfor me, the air in Canberra is harder to breath, (it’s thinner) it’s not your imagination, my father really had breathing difficulties when came to visit, and I had cleaned the room for any dust, eg: had carpets cleaned, washed curtains and dusted.

I sleep better in Canberra than in Newcastle. It cools down much more at night than on the coast, it’s not a humid, and I just do. It’s not a caffeine issue either, because I have more than I ever did before…

The temperature drops HEAPS during the night and its not humid here at all, very dry. I’m on constant asthma medication when i’m in Canberra. When I used to live in Melbourne I didn’t need any medication for my asthma. The weather has been quite drastic lately and maybe you’re body is sensitive enough to notice it.

Also canberra has less things to do and people here don’t like doing much and are conservative, plus we got less tv channels and etc. Just because you’re tired doesn’t mean your sleepy and maybe you haven’t tired your body out. Maybe you should try out some better sleep hygiene habits, such as no tv before bed, no stimulates, don’t eat and go to bed when you feel ‘sleepy’. If you cant fall asleep in the first 30 minutes then get up do something not very stimulating till you feel sleepy again.

I don’t believe there’s a “heaviness in the air” but it is clearer here and if anything people should be having a good nights rest.

I struggled to sleep last night too, even though I was very tired after the heat of the previous few days. I just thought it was my conscience getting the better of me.

Then when I finally managed to get to sleep, I was awoken again when our local Koel started his mating call at about 3am………

And there I was thinking it was just us last night as well. Hmmm.

Humidity.

For some odd reason I sleep better when staying in Mortdale (Sydney) than in Canberra nowadays, even though Mortdale is much, much noisier, what with drunken bogan shouting matches to make a Tuggeranong lifer proud, gunshots, loud street sweeping at 0300 on random days, loud bin emptying at 0500 on Mondays, regular sirens (fire station is ~200m from my apartment window), living under a busy flight path, noisy freight trains on the Illawarra line, and so on… I sleep through nearly all of it now, even with all the windows wide open.

If you’re struggling to sleep I’d recommend

– less food/caffeine in the evenings

– regular exercise

– fresh air via open windows

– The Dark Side of the Moog (not a typo)

Nightcaps are IMHO a grave mistake that could easily lead to an unpleasant dependency.

Why not have a few cold ones before you go to bed? That’s simple, less esoteric and guaranteed to work.

Normally I would read something like this and think to myself “you’ve got to be kidding, is this a serious question?” but admittedly I too suffered a poor sleep last night despite looking forward to it because of the cooler weather. Can’t say I noticed a heaviness in the air myself but still.

I couldn’t sleep either, but I might put that down to insomnia

Its weird you say this, I’ve been feeling the same for a long time.

Every so often, suffer from nights of no sleep.
But there might be another explanation to that….
