Smitten Stanhope to immortalise Carrie Graf in bronze?

The Canberrra Times reports that Lord Stanhope is taking his love of the Canberra Capitals to new heights with plans to build a stadium and training complex to house the team, as well as a big bronze statue of the sort his Government is becoming famously fond of.

he believed Capitals coach Carrie Graf deserved recognition and would like to see Graf and Jackson in a sculpture together representing coaching and management standing side by side.

”I am enthralled by Carrie Graf as a coach,” he said.

Enthralled eh?

Bear in mind that the languishing part government owned TransACT is already a major sponsor of the team and apparently chipping in extra to keep the commendable Ms Graf in town.

Carrie Graf deserves recognition for her outstanding contribution. A statue would be an entirely wrong way of recognising it though. I agree with BerraBoy that a scholarship should be instituted in her name. (Can I put my daughter’s name down for it now, please.)

Nope – just remembered that is a fear of crosses…. can’t remember what fear of statues is called … must consult google

Won’t somebody, anybody, please think of the staurophobics?

A Statue and new stadium for basketball. What a joke. The WNBL is a 3rd rate comp and the NBL is even worse. How about giving money to other sports.ACTBMX recently held one of the biggest race meetings in Australia with over 800 riders and over 3000 spectators and can’t even get a grant to install lights.(It might only be BMX but Canberra has several world champions and it is an Olympic sport.)

I live across the road from the Vikings track and enjoyed coming over with my kids to watch a few races last weekend. Saw some good races and brave kid’s getign back on their bikes after big crashes. That said, the spectators seemed to consist of other riders and their mums and dad’s, whereas the WNBL gets a much larger, and broader, crowd. Basically, I only knew the BMX races were on due to the noise of the start gates (at 7:30am mind you!). If your BMX cohort wants broader community support and subsequent funding, you should speak to your organisers about putting some effort into greater advertising of their sport, and especially their ‘blue ribbon’ events.

BMX will be an Olympic sport for as long as it takes to get the 1000m and 500m time trials back at the velodrome as the fact they were dropped is the only reason BMX is in.

That won’t be too long.

And note to you, basketball has been an Olympic sport for quite a while now too

Note to Mr Cantstandhope>>>We’ve been waiting for you for the longest time to do something that is actually beneficial to the average Canberran;feels like waiting for the messiah…

Clearly BMX and the individuals involved in it aren’t as enthralling as women’s basketball to King Jon.

If we have to have another statue, why don’t they simply melt down the Al Grasby statue to provide some of the raw materials. I think some kind of monument (perhaps just a plaque, perpetual scholarship etc.) to Ms Graf is warranted as she has made a significant contribution to ACT Sport.

How many statues to Hopeless Stan’s ego can one town contain?

He is a clown.

He always misses the point.

Fund something constructive that people can use, not look at and laugh.

A statue is not needed to show the girls how much we appreciate their efforts.

Stadium they don’t need. The AIS arena is just dandy. Training facility they desperately do need.

Statue, FFS! Fund the development of sport or water some ovals for kids to run around on you clown!
