Smoke nazis come for Floriade

By johnboy 23 September 2011 37

Chief Minister Gallagher has announced progress in her long way against smokers wherever they might hide:

“As part of Floriade’s move to become a smoke-free event, signs have been installed in areas frequented by children, such as Kids Corner and Carnival Corner, requesting that patrons not smoke in this area.

“Smoking is also not permitted in enclosed spaces and at outdoor eating and drinking areas in the ACT. This applies to the marquees and dining areas throughout Floriade including Cafe Valenti and the Butterfly Lounge,” she added.

“This is a great initiative and it is even more encouraging to know that Floriade organisers are working towards making the entire event site smoke-free in the future.

I am 110% ALL for this!! And agree with just getting rid of smoking in all public places. I can kind of understand peoples points about strong perfume etc…but its not really a valid comparison; Perfume is intended to smell nice and be a pleasant experience.. (Yes I know, you may not always LOVE that particular brand) But it’s nothing like a cigarette.

And have you got in the lift with a smoker, or even 10 minutes after them, it REEKS! It’s the most stomach turning, gag triggering stench. And sitting next to or near them when they leave the office every half hour, to go out and come back trailing in this little waft of putridness. Your foul habit should not be my problem, especially because I make an effort to value and prolong the life of my lungs.

Regularly in an office people are actually required to be quietly approached by HR if their perfume is bothering others in the office, or if your BO is perhaps getting the better of you. Why should this lot be allowed to go around offending my nose, with complete disregard.

I make a point of avoiding walking near smokers, but until you can control the wind, and stop walking to lunch blowing smoke back into the faces of people who are forced to walk behind you….. ‘Sod off’ to put it nicely 😉

I dont see the problem. Asking people to not smoke in the “Kids Corner” seems reasonable.

And if the Kids would just stay in the Kids’ Korner then that would be good too. Corral the smokers, corral the kids, and what about people wearing too much perfume while we’re at it? Oh, and anyone using their mobile loudly will be squirted by loud-voice-sensing sprinklers.

Floriade would be bearable if they implemented these.

It’s an outdoor area, why not just… allow smoking…

Why not have a smoking section? Have it away from everyone. Fence it off, if people are needed to be sectioned away so badly. Have a area you are ”allowed” to smoke in. This allows for non-smokers to avoid that area totally, or can have a point and fake cough as they walk past if they feel they need to.

You are completely missing the point: that won’t save the smokers’ souls from hell!

“Fantastic news! People who smoke are too stupid to understand their actions so we must take every opportunity to alienate them until they conform.”

Yeah, smokers should be put in government run re-education camps and not allowed back into society until they are cured of their filthy addiction.

Governments should get the police to enforce bans on smoking and anyone caught smoking should be charged and then found guilty.

The sooner it happens the better for the world.

The amount of revenue the government makes from tobacco might actually make them not consider that idea. But sure, tax the sales of it, then fine the person using it, perfect system, ah it’s here already! Yeah get Police to use our taxpayers money chasing people around who dare to pay the government tax for their smokes, smart idea. These re-education camps you mention will probably need to be funded with tax revenue from tobacco sales ironically.

Good idea, keeps the costs of cleaning Floriade down. Anywhere where smokers are allowed they will soil the place with their butts and packets. Anyone who has so little self care as to poison themselves with tobacco, will not care what he spoils for other people. Smokers are filthy, they do not care if they make Floraide filthy.

Simple, ban smoking, kill thousands of birds with one stone.

Great idea. It worked so well with prohibition in the US and it works so well with other drugs everywhere!

So, where’s the problem with discouraging the ‘underclass’ from destroying their health and finances?

Hell yeah! It’s called tough love. We should also ban poor people from fast food outlets and limit their home entertainment purchases so they are forced to get some exercise and fresh air. Not to mention the money they can then save that they can then spend on educational activities and healthy food.

However, if the main problem is smell, I would rather see strong perfumes banned first. I have to hold my breath in the lift almost daily.

Try using the stairs instead of the lift …. Simple!

Good to see. The sooner they ban smoking in public places the better.

There’s a risk of an element of classism here folks – in general, it’s middle-class people who don’t smoke. The underclass and the bohemians smoke.

So, where’s the problem with discouraging the ‘underclass’ from destroying their health and finances?

Or for that matter, in making bohemians miserable?

IIRC about 20% of Canberran smoke – if only half the non-smokers hate the smell, then for every smoker there are 2 people who hate it.

I wonder if Katie can make the Summernats Burnout pad ‘smoke free’ ?
