Anybody know where all of this smoke is coming from? Either someone is having an epic BBQ or something is on fire.

ED – The ESA have this to say:

Easterly winds this afternoon are responsible for bringing smoke across the ACT from the NSW bushfires.

Smoke’s incoming again. The easterly is pretty soft but a while back, the bushfire stench came in, it’s quite caustic tonight too. Might need some ventolin shortly.

Lots of nasty black, probably toxic, smoke coming from Mugga Lane tip when I drove past this afternoon. Looked like an underground fire.

Serious? Or are you just having a lend, in which cases I admit “You got me!”.

Quite serious. Made any gas fired power station look positively benign. And it was drifting over Macarthur.

I hope the ACT Govt got permission from the NIMBYs of Macarthur/Isaacs and O’Malley before allowing a fire to start at Mugga Lane tip???

Rumour is the Police have a good description of a man with glasses and a buzz cut who was seen in the locality not long before the tip fire started. Witnesses also stated that he was heard muttering something over and over about payback, public consultation and damn thorns in his side…..

Also, just after 6pm there was a blackout in the Woden area. It affected traffic lights from Ainsworth/Hindmarsh intersection, all the way to the Ball St/Hindmarsh intersection forcing police to direct traffic, and affecting businesses nearby. KFC, Pizza Hut and Subway were all closed for around an hour until power finally came back.

The power cut out around a quarter to six, came back in time for Win news. Some years ago ACTEW said that with the completion of their latest substation Canberra was ringed and widespread blackouts shouldn’t happen again. And it worked very well, sometimes there’d be a very short interruption in the power, but it came back on before you’d registered it was going off. After the fires the blackouts have been a lot longer, and there now seem to be several a year, like yesterday’s.

But after 2003, don’t you think the people of Canberra shouldn’t have to rely on Riotact to find out whether there are fires in the area? WTF can’t someone…ABC, ACT Govt, anybody have an up to date website where this stuff is posted

(And if there is, can someone advise so I can bookmark it?)

Well, I was in my car, and checked the radio for any information at approximately 7pm. 666 had the cricket and at 7:01 cut to a national news broadcast. FM104.7 was playing Hot 30 from Sydney. Triple J was playing hottest 100. I tried 106.3 and nothing but music. Quick call over the UHF and I was advised of smoke blowing in from Batemans Bay, and a small fire at the tip.

Also, just after 6pm there was a blackout in the Woden area. It affected traffic lights from Ainsworth/Hindmarsh intersection, all the way to the Ball St/Hindmarsh intersection forcing police to direct traffic, and affecting businesses nearby. I’m not a very good internet sleuth, so a quick post sorted it out. Thanks to the above posters and the editor for quelling my fears!

Sigh. For heavan’s sake! There’s a dirty great bushfire burning in the Budawangs. Has been for days. When the wind blows from there, to here, you get the smoke. Keep an eye on the RFS website if you are worried, as NSW surrounds the ACT so any fires will be on there.

Don’t worry though, there’s vast acres of dry paddocks of grass and weeds between this fire and the ACT. It won’t get to you, trust me.

Or you can look at Sentinel which will show you fires everywhere in Australia. As long as they started before the last satellite pass.

Or, since we are surrounded by NSW, try the NSW RFS Website?

Something about smoke from the Mugga Lane tip on the news headlines during the tennis.

Jeez, I’ve been posting warnings on here every evening that the smoke is on its way! You’d think people would’ve noticed. It’s the Budawangs fire. When the wind turns easterly, the smoke comes.

It’s blowing a SE now, so the smoke’s gone north of the ACT.

it’s been around for days when it’s windy.

It brings back memories of the last time wind brough us smoke of a bushfire hundreds of kilometres over the border!

there was a lot of it around on Saturday night too. Just one whiff of a bushfire brings back memories of January 18th!
