Snooty Inner North eschews Christmas lights

Achieve Success has published a copious list of places to see the festive seasonal light pollution and carbon atrocity known as Christmas lights.

Being a tragically stereotypical inner northican I started punching in suburbs within easy cycling distance of my abode.

And… nothing.

Perhaps we should secede?

Anyway, something for those in less desirable locales to enjoy for once. Also we note that the Inner South appears more prone to displays of conspicuous consumption.

Not according to newer DEEWR figures quoted in the Crimes.

Turner had the highest unemployment rate, at 7.5 per cent. Braddon, Campbell, Dickson, Downer, O’Connor, Ainslie, Hackett, Lyneham and Watson each had unemployment rates of 4.8 per cent or higher.

They’re not unemployed, they’re new media experts in between consultancies.

Yes, either that or Visiting Fellows at the ANU’s Research School of Political Correctness (Dean of School: Emeritus Professor Jim Jones).

Back in Adelaide, the West End brewery had a very popular Christmas light show on the banks of the Torrens River.

I wonder if someone could do something like that in Canberra… It would be pretty cool.

I’m not surprised there are no Christmas lights north of the lake. It’s religious, you see, and not in line with trendy, leftist green ideology. Remember these are the people who almost caused us to lose Gary Humphries at the last election and suffer a Green senator. It’s a pity we can’t just drop a neutron bomb on the inner north and repopulate the area with normal, mainstream people.

Great to see the Christian spirit shining forth like a festive neutron bomb…Or should that be radiating?

God bless us, every one! Except for the abnormal or freaky.

Don’t worry about w.f.g. GodBless everyone especially the outcast! He died for everyone.

Hold on – its only 3rd December. Give us on the Northside a bit of time. After all, we are busy people with jobs to go to – unlike a lot of our Southern neighbours.

I am putting up a display of Santa crucified, as (allegedly) seen by a traveller in Japan. Sounds jolly in an ironic sort of way, and I’m hoping to get funding for it as a piece of cutting edge sculpture. It’s called the (Inner) North Pole.

2602 Respect.

Sounds great and you can leave it up till Easter.

Can you organise for it to weep some “anointment oil” tears?

South of the Lake is more attuned to the real Australia than the north – witness the voting patterns in the recent election. Voters in the south saved the ACT from having to suffer a Green senator. We have also been known to elect Liberals to the House of Reps when a good candidate comes along

So…you’re saying that “real Australian” is a synonym for “bogan”?

Darlings we Reid, Turner, Campbell & Ainslie residents LOVE the All-Gungahlin & Flatter-Tuggeranong peasant light displays. They are a fabulous example of vernacular culture, and certainly should be included on the UNESCO cultural heritage list. Please don’t think we don’t like and respect them!
It would be awfully pretentious if we adopted their culture, wouldn’t it? A bit like Marie Antoinette adopting milkmaid costume for fun. And look where that led her!
No, safer for inner-inner-north residents to make a once-a-year foray into those desolate, young-tree, no-hedge ‘burbs for a bit of a rubberneck, and then scoot back to our real Christmas fir trees avec blown glass ornaments, barbecues under big shady trees, and then off to Portsea or Seal Rocks in time for Christmas Day at the beach.

For last year’s lights?

Musings of the inner north
“Do I take my tibetan flags down to put my chrismas lights up?”

No you can set fire to them with your lights

hmm, it seems there’s a lag in gravatars resetting.

how’s that?

“Christmas tree comp was normally run by my sig other of the time. If the ladies of Canberra can’t see their way clear to providing me with a girlfriend they just need to live without christmas tree pictures.”

Just a thought – have you tried losing the mug shot with the mug?

Down here we are content to live (and think) like Australians.

HA! Speak for yourself buddy! I live in the south and on election day (after my morning latte) I rode my bike (see? no CO2!) to the local primary school and voted for a Mickey Mouse Green senator 🙂

The Forrest house on 3 Tennyson Street is amazing! Walk-through, canopied turning-circle driveway with thousands of lights operating to music. Best house I’ve seen yet. Bring gold coin donation for SIDS

I might build a Chev powered Santa Sleigh and leave it on the lawn idling next year, being neutral is for wimps, I prefer to be Carbon positive.

And I’ll put lights on it too.

Last year there were some cute and cheerful houses over this side of Inner North. I was walking through the streets for a half hour each evening and saw some lovelies.

Maybe it doesn’t occur to Inner Northicans once we have decorated our house that we should log on to a website called Achieve Success and tell everyone about it so they can travel from far and wide to view our success.

Ouch…

Could we practice the true meaning of Earth Hour during this christmas so that we can forgo that incoherent symbolic hour next year?

Thanks for the list JB the house in Forrest looks awesome. Also might have to check out the house in Banks where you can tune your car radio into music to match the light display.

If being bogan means you like Chrissy lights then slap a pair of tight arse jeans on me and buy me a rottwheeler (actually don’t please).

Also is there Christmas tree comp this year? Or too grinchy?

(actually I might start it up closer to chrimbo anyway)

The inner north contains less bogans per capita than the ‘other places’ whose names escape me.. I believe Inner South is somewhere ‘over there’ isn’t it? As for the entirely unfounded rumours of places such as Belconnen and Tuggeranong (silly names if ever I’ve heard them) I won’t believe it ’til I’ve seen it, and I’m buggared if I’m leaving the inner north to check out the rumours.

So with less bogans trying to get their 15 minutes of Today Tonight time, we don’t worry about such pointless displays of gross domestic consumption.

Oh the irony of people who live in Forrest lecturing about conspicuous consumption.

Who lives in Forrest? For that matter, who’s lecturing?

Holden Caulfield12:06 pm 13 Dec 10

JB, we have a few fairly lights on a couple of our trees now. We put them up on the weekend. There’s even a cycle path nearby.

Wow, the smug-o-meter rating is off the charts around here.

I came on here hoping for a post, considering how often TAMS gets it, on the Grinch-who-stole-Christmas bureaucrat whose shutting down the fundraising of light displays in Kambah. Instead I find that the Grinch spirit starts here.

Oh the irony of people who live in Forrest lecturing about conspicuous consumption.

Musings of the inner north

Your definition of the inner South is exuberantly democratic and wildly inclusive. There are 3 displays in the I.S. – 2 in Forrest (one is a church) and one in Griffith.

I assure you that we are every bit as snooty as the would-be-if-they-could-be’s in the Inner north.

Do you perhaps own an investment property in Kambah that you are seeking to advertise for rent as being in the I.S.? Shame on you, sir.

There’s at least one brightly blazing offering on the Ainslie side of Limestone Avenue.

I for one welcome your suggestion of secession.
