Territory And Municipal Services has the very exciting news that snowfall has closed roads in the mountains!

The ACT Government wishes to advise motorists and other road users that Brindabella Road, Mt Franklin Road and Bendora Road are closed until further notice due to snow fall.

WOOHOOO!

UPDATE: We’ve just had this in:

Boboyan Road is now also closed due to snow, there is about 1 foot of snow in some locations.

Went for a drive along Mt Franklin Road this arvo. Turned around at Mt Aggie carpark due to it getting a little late in the day.

Patchy snow laying around and fairly slushy road in places.

Can anyone tell me how much further it would have been from where we turned around, to Mt Franklin ??

The Franklin carpark is another 2-3kms, I took the kids there yesterday. The walk to the summit was great, plenty of snow (up to 30cm) on the ground from the new hut up.

The Mt Franklin road is closed at the carpark though, for those hoping to go further south to Ginini.

Yeah, it would be good Jivrashia…if one could get there.

You would have to go the long way, Monaro Hwy, Blillingara Rd, Shannons Flat, Yaouk.

Right, Braddonboy. Could we please get an update to your Image of Canberra – Brayshaw’s Hut that is near Boboyan Rd.? 😉

Of the few peek I have had through the clouds this morning it looks like its on the Bullen Range………Sensational.

snow in collector this arvo. not settling on the ground tho.

Does anyone know at what point Brindabella road is closed??? A few years ago it was open when there was snow, then they closed it from just after Picadilly Circus but it meant we could still get a fair way into the snow with the kids.

Thinking a trip up there may be on the cards this weekend, time to crack out the snow chains and recovery bag.

And all those exclamation marks, you notice? Five? A sure sign of someone who wears his underpants on his head.

I forgot to add, get a good day & it is glorious. Tomorrow would be great if the bulk of the wind has passed.

Where do I sign?? I have fond memories of hitting the Brindies in the snow on my dirt bike in my younger years but alas they seem to close the Franklin road as soon as someone farts in an up-hill direction these days.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I think the road to Corin Dam would still be open at the early stage of the snow and will closed only when it starts to pile (unpassable unless you have a 4WD).

But you’d be hard-pressed to get a push bike up the initial climb, which will take you to Mt Franklin Rd. and then to Py.

Here is a diary of some brave soul who did it last year around this time.

I imagine it would still be open because it is sealed. In my photos thread we rode the Cotter Hut FT, it finishes on the Mt Franklin road, as does the fire trail over Stockyard Spur. I have not actually done the Stockyard Spur trail but have hiked into Pryors past the end of it.

So, if the road was closed at Bulls Head then the next closest to get up to Ginini/Gingera would be via Corin & Stockyard Spur. Corin Road only really gets closed in the real heavy dumps (well this is what I have noticed in the past).

Failing that, Orroral is only 922m & rerely gets snow. The only time I have seen the gate closed is in the summer on Total Fire ban days so to grab & tredly & ride that way would be doable also but its a long way. 20km to Cotter hut before heading up Mt Franklin Road.

Sorry, I mean to say Pryors Hut.

I would like to move a motion for some poor soul to brave the wet windy and cold weather and get a picture of the snow-cap on the Brindabella range.

I think we’ve just found our candidate…

Definately a pushbike ride though…………

Better than eating yellow snow.
