Snow in the Canberra mountains

Jivrashia has sent in this picture of the snow in the Brindabellas with this cautionary tale:

Thought I should share this as the Brindabella range is currently covered in thick snow and anyone attempting to trek through it should be well equipped.

The picture is along the Stockyard Spur trail, leading to Mt. Franklin Rd.

It seems that bushwalking enthusiasts knew to expect snow (based on the log book at Pryors Hut) but amateurs like me were not prepared…

What special equipment does one need for that? Waterproof boots? I’d hope bushwalkers in the mountains would have those on.

Yep, waterproof shoes ought to be enough as footwear. What I lacked was a good thermal wear on top. I only wore a long sleeve shirt and t-shirt over it, which was inadequate against the frosty wind blowing over the snowy landscape.

Are some of those footprints in the snow from dogs?

Possibly kangaroos

Most were human trails. Some were non-human, but hard to tell what. Bunyips?

It’s 30min drive from Gordon (Canberra suburb). so I’m okay with calling them Canberra Mountains.

My Canadian friend finds it hilarous when we say we’re going “to the snow”. Where she comes from the snow comes to them!

There are pigs up there in the snow as well. Once when we walked from Ginini to Mt Gingera and back we got back to the Ginini carpark and saw a massive pig standing right next to our car. It then ran up the hill through the snow up over the ridge. There a wild dogs in the park also Deer. Samba Deer are moving up over the last few years further north. At one stage they where mainly in Victoria Alps but they are now in Kosciuszko and also Namadgi in parts as well as over the border down in the Goodradigbee River valley.

I must be going senile. We were up there today and didn’t see a single flake.
