Snowtown getting industrial under DV 324

By johnboy - 18 October 2013 16

Simon Corbell and the National Capital Authority (a band name unlikely to ever get up) have announced they’re hard at work to increase development at Terry Snow’s Canberra Airport:

The National Capital Authority (NCA) and the ACT Government are working together to open a block of land near the airport for industrial mixed use, with public consultation starting this week.

Proposed changes to the Territory Plan and National Capital Plan will allow development such as bulky goods retailing, warehousing, freight and distribution services on parts of Block 4 Section 9 and Block 2Section 12 Pialligo.

The ACT Government proposes making the changes through a draft variation to the Territory Plan (DV324), which would change the site from broadacre to industrial mixed use, while the NCA is releasing Draft Amendment 84 (DA84) to the National Capital Plan, which proposes to expand the urban area at Pialligo from Broadacre to Urban Area.

“It is important for the NCA and ACT Government to work in unison to be able to supply large sites to continue the ongoing economic and employment opportunities in the region,” Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development, Simon Corbell said today.

“The ACT Government will also continue to work with local stakeholders to improve the economic and employment opportunities for the region.”

It’s still giving into the snow vision of moving the town’s centre of gravity to his airport.

Indeed.

I think that a pig farm and a paper mill would be a far better choice for erection near Snowtown – preferably upwind of the prevailing breezes.

he already has substantial residential holdings at Fairbairn.

Which they rent out to airport employee’s at reasonable rates.

Ah.. interesting. Thank you. Are the residential holdings in the new part, near the servo, or over the way at the old RAAF base ?

I wonder when he’ll knock up some flats/units out there in his fiefdom. I reckon it would be orright. Good security, but no tavern/club, unless the RAAF have a boozer…

Does the RAAF have a boozer? When I was still in, they had an Airmen’s Club, Sergeant’s Mess and an Officer’s Mess. Let us not forget the Golf Club which also had a bar.

I believe the golf club is still there. The old married quarters have been given a lick of paint and appear to be rented out. Of course the post office and whatever surrounded it is long gone, replaced by one of snows officestrosities. The old thrift-shop building appears vacant, but the cancer council have taken up residence down the street.

It’s part of the Eastern Broadacre Planning Project looking at the Majura and Jerrabomberra Valleys for a potential employment corridor (industrial and related uses) seeing as they’ve run out of areas for industrial land.

Except of course if they do it rather than Snow it deprives him of the spoils and it has half a chance of being sustainable.

Sure RAAF bases have boozers, but Fairbairn is no longer a RAAF base.

Perhaps, but eventually it becomes necessary to recognise that the facts on the ground have changed. It’s still really more of a slightly more upmarket version of Mitchell, Fyshwick or Hume rather than a serious challenger for the city centre.

This sounds like it’s in competition with Snowtown. Block 4 Section 9 and Block 2 Section 12 Pialligo are on the western side of Majura Road (they’ll be between Majura Road and the new Majura Parkway).
