So when will the election be?

Greg Jericho has taken a heroic effort to try and nail down when Kevin will submit to the will of the people.

With caretaker mode looming over the public service this is of more than casual interest to the people of Canberra.

The ill starred referendum question on local government recognition is certainly limiting the freedom of movement Kev might like to have. As is the return of parliament on 20 August if writs are not issued before.

Greg thinks October 19 at the earliest, but John Howard showed incumbents could win with campaigns over the top of football finals.

While I didn’t anticipate this drama I have to say I was extremely ticked off by Prime Minister Gillard acting as if the calling of the election date was entirely her prerogative (with her numbers in parliament, the electorate, and it turns out her party).

Too late. Rudd decided to try to ping Abbot for “Stop the boats”. Duh!

Rudd said last time that he would not move to the right regarding illegal asylum seekers. Yeah, moving to the left has worked such a treat, hasn’t it?

I predict the shortest honeymoon effect in history. Plenty of commentary over the last few days suggesting that some of his colleagues are waiting their chance to drop a bucket on him. Given his (reportedly) consistent white-anting of Gillard’s campaign, he shouldn’t be surprised. Interesting times ahead.

Have our political stocks ever been so low?

I think it will depend on the detailed briefings being received by Rudd and his ministers over coming days. If they discover that there is very little room to move on the policies which they think will shift votes, then logic would surely suggest that they go early, to maximise the remaining honeymoon effect, and to respect (or at least pretend to) the apparent preference of the public to get it over and done with.
