There’s a misconception that there’s nothing for kids to do in this town.

The reality is that there’s a huge list of activities be they sport, theatre, art, music, or community based. The problem is that the activities the kids want are based around sex, drugs, or adrenalin, things the populace is less than keen on providing for them.

To the list of activities our Chiefly leader has added the Kulture Break, Man Up series of workshops and camps for young men aged 12-17 yrs.

“Created by local arts organisation Kulture Break, Man Up is a series of workshops and camps that teaches young males how to dance and perform,” Mr Stanhope said. “Through dance, the program aims to empower young men to build their self-confidence, connect with their peers and overcome anti-social or self-destructive behaviours.

The team of dance artists involved in the Man-Up program includes former Canberran and finalist in this year’s So You Think You Can Dance television program Timomatic and JD, a top-20 finalist in the same show last season.

With stars of “So You Think You Can Dance” attending there will be some disappointed young women aged 12-17 upset that it’s limited to the young men.

Anything that helps boys learn to enjoy dancing can only be a good thing. .

I heartily agree, there’s nothing I enjoy more than a quick tango. I would be concerned however if “Timomatic” were using his time and position within this “Kulture Break, Man Up series of workshops and camps for young men aged 12-17 yrs” to evenagelise in any way.

“Believe in god, and you too can get good at this wobbly kneed dancing style…”

There’s no point objecting to something that isn’t hurting anyone.

I don’t know – those dance camps sound pretty dangerous to me.

I don’t care if they want to run a men’s dance class.

It isn’t as if attending it is vital to breaking thru the glass ceiling – aka – entry to the old exclusive men’s clubs etc.

There’s no point objecting to something that isn’t hurting anyone.

There’s a place for ‘In the Navy’ then, isn’t there?

Anything that helps boys learn to enjoy dancing can only be a good thing. Last year I went to little Pikachu Jesus’s school disco, and was delighted to see that all the boys knew all the moves to YMCA and were having a ball getting into it. The irony of an 80’s gay classic being entertainment for primary school children in the Noughties was priceless. And Maribyrnong Primary sing their school song to the tune of YMCA…

You think that’s ironic FJ; saw a recruiting video film-clip for the Army’s SAS once (hard men doing a hard job) and the music accompanying footage of the SAS blokes parachuting out of an aircraft was the classic 80’s gay anthem ‘Its raining men’ (Hallelujah! It’s raining men – amen!). I felt compelled to quietly point this out to the bloke presenting the video; he had absolutely no idea that they had selected a gay anthem for their recruiting video … betcha that got changed quick smart!

Timomatic was being advertised as appearing at the “Parkway” happy-clappy venue, on TV this morning.

I don’t have a problem with this being only for males; I suspect most girls, as some stage or another, have enrolled in dance classes (ballet, jazz, tap, funk etc..) because rightly or wrongly, dance tends to be more socially acceptable for girls. I think it is great that these workshops are aimed at getting young fellas dancing. Perhaps if my husband had had this opportunity as a teenager, I wouldn’t be subjected to his ‘white man overbite’ dancing at weddings.

or is that
hear hear..?

The girls will be very happy if the workshops turn out young men who have well-adjusted social sensibilities, and can keep up with them on the dance floor on Saturday night.

here here

There will be many a discussion around the coffee tables in the Fernwood Gyms.
This is discrimination!

I imagine that many of the young men will also be disappointed that the girls are excluded.

This sounds like a really exciting and positive workshops series. The guys from Kulture Break are great and it is good to see that some activities out there for young men in this age bracket.

It is a bit dissapointing that it is only for men, however being someone who was involved in a lot of female only groups through my teenage years I am happy to see that there is some type of equivalent for the young men in the community.
