Social Dance venue

Looking at holding a social night of dancing as a Christmas function. Not something as big as Albert Hall but maybe up to 25 to 30 couples on the floor at once. Preferrably it would need to be in central Canberra. Cost is always a factor as no-one will want to pay $10-15 for entry. Wooden floor would be preferrable.

Does anyone know of hidden gems out there? Like a corporate space for rent? Has nice views?

Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

St Margaret’s hall in Hackett (on the roundabout/intersection of Antil Street and Phillip Avenue) is used regularly for social and community dances. Can’t quote the cost but can’t imagine it’s too much. St John’s church hall in Reid is another (slightly larger).

Will you have a bowl for everyone to put their keys in?

Pretty sure these places charge. I seriously doubt you could dodge a hire fee, you can’t have a good time for free in this day and age. In all honesty though, $10-$15 a couple seems very reasonable.

majura community hall in dickson

Oh and two more for you to consider – the Harmonie German Club in Narrabundah has one of the slickest floors in Canberra (although it’s unsprung); and the YMCA Sailing Club in Yarralumla has a great floor, a great view over the lake and is not too pricey (although it’s a little out of the way).

The Italo-Australia Club (in Forrest) has a great ballroom upstairs that’s about the size you’ll need.

The Austrian club has a large hall with a wooden floor. (At Mawson though).

The Turner Senior Citizens Club is very central and has a wooden floor. You might need to do a bit of decor though – it is pretty basic.

The Canberra City Band Rooms are sometimes rented out for dancing and might suit you – you can contact the committee via the website (http://www.canberracityband.com).

I think the railway church is haunted but that doesn’t mean anything, you may just have a few extra guests there than what you expected!!!

The railway church in Cowper St Ainslie has a hall with a wooden floor – great for dancing. I think ballroom dancing classes were held there for many years …
