The Liberals Zed Seselja is thrilled that Property Council Chief Executive Peter Verwer has echoed Zed’s calls for the creation of “Infrastructure Canberra” to cut out that pesky democratically elected government from the business of building things.

“Mr Verwer supported the principle of an independent infrastructure body for the ACT,” Mr Seselja said today.

“The Canberra Liberals have a longstanding policy through Infrastructure Canberra which would provide this and avoid the cost blowouts we’ve seen under ACT Labor.

“Government projects would be overseen by an independent Infrastructure Commissioner, supported by a board, to advise on developments for the long-term interests of Canberra.

“We want to be the best local government in the country, and part of that means Canberra’s infrastructure projects will be on time and on budget.

“One of the main reasons infrastructure delivery, such as the GDE, has failed is due to the short-term thinking of ACT Labor.

“Infrastructure Canberra will help ensure infrastructure projects are delivered on time, on budget, and are taken on in the best interests of Canberra.

“I am very glad to see Mr Verwer supports the direction of this policy.

And there we were thinking it was just Zed saying whatever the Property Council wanted him to.

Another “authority”, another layer of regulation, another front for vested interests, and another way for a government to distance themselves from the business of government.

The business of government is government, not business. Or it should be.

How is this going to be any different from the directorates that are supposedly doing this now?

Once it would have been the LDA and the major projects group in CMD, with perhaps a bit of co-opting of TaMS (roads) and ACTPLA (planning)? Are they planning to abolish or move the people who currently do the job.

‘We want to be the best local government in the country…’

At least he realises the Assembly is a glorified Council. But could he handle being Mayor?

Another “authority”, another layer of regulation, another front for vested interests, and another way for a government to distance themselves from the business of government.
