That’s a really inciteful comment that has never been made before.

That’s a very Miss World thing to say.

An actress who also waits on tables? Someone needs to ask for a payrise.

Oooooh I just had a “Life on Mars” type flashback. Seeing this made me believe it was 1979 again.

Surely we have outgrown all this “pretty princess” crap.

If you want to work for charity then do it. Don’t use it as an excuse to take part in something which is so blatantly about self promotion and the excuse to play dress-ups.

That’s a really inciteful comment that has never been made before. I think it is going to be very convincing and I think you should forward it to the Miss World organisation without delay. Surely after your amazing intellectual breakthrough, they will have no choice but to disband.

Congrats to her! Sophie is a very dedicated girl who has put a lot of hard work into performing arts for a long time and I think she deserves it. It is really nice to see her getting awarded for her efforts.

Pity we don’t see the same level of interest in the MIss Australia “just won a NHMRC grant” for instance. I can’t believe these contests still exist.

Pity we don’t see everyone share the opinion as me. I can’t believe these people still exist.

Besides, I didn’t know you could get an NHRMC grant through a contest.

Congrats to Sophie. Brickbats to News Ltd tho – I clicked on the video link to show Miss 5yo (who like most 5yo girls is into tiaras, ball gowns and all things sparkly) and we were treated to an ad for the latest M-rated Harry Potter movie.

Congrats to Sophie and Mia (Alice In Wonderland) for being famous and from Canberra, which gives me a ridiculous sense of basking in reflected glory.
At least Sophie won a beauty pageant which gives weight to charity work.
I was wondering, however, whether Sophie is a bit too thin and whether she might want to add a few grams, or even kilos.
I thought surveys have revealed that the majority of men like women most with some curves, it’s certainly the case for this old bird.
Does the continuing fashion/beauty industries’ bias towards “skinny Minnies”, at least o.s., reflect the numbers of gay men working in them and their possible preference for boyish figures?
No, I am not saying such men are peds, in case somebody wants to take umbrage.

Pretty sure she went to High School here in Canberra also.

I heard Merici mentioned on the radio this morning, others too, but don’t remember them.

Canberra High School is definitely another one.

Either that or the picture does her no justice.

She’s not even that good looking.

You obviously have some high standards.

Beauty Pageants, why??

Empowerment of chicks…

Beauty Pageants, why??

Why not? Surely it’s better than ugly pageants…

The Miss Universe contestants from amoeba slimes of Titan are FAR hotter than the Earth entrants. RRRRaaaarrrrr….

No contest at all. Unless Venuzuela wins again.

That is how it works, right?

I sincerely hope so.

The Miss World Australia ’09 titleholder goes on to become the Australian regional contestant for the Miss World ’09 title.

Just as if the Miss Universe Australia titleholder goes on to compete and win the Miss Universe (Earth) title, presumably Miss Universe (Earth) could compete with Miss Universe (Mercury\Venus\Mars\Luna) for the Miss Universe (Sol) title, and be our designated champion, ready to defend humanity’s honour against any extrasolar beauties, by fighting them to the death in a vat of mud.

That is how it works, right?

The winner used to be called Miss Australia once upon a time.

I guess they changed it so that it does not conflict with the Miss Universe Australia franchise.

^ She is the winner of the Miss World Australia, so she will be the Australian representative in the Miss World competition.

Miss World Australia

WTF does that mean?

Forgive my ignorance, but is it the Miss World contestant Australian winner?

Someone should at least admit it makes no sense.

I did a couple of shows with Sophie a few years back when she was still in the ‘berra. Nice girl. Congrats to her for the win 🙂

Pretty sure she went to High School here in Canberra also.

She was born here, but is now a Sydney girl (working as a waitress, apparently).

SMH has this to say:
At a ceremony at Star City Casino last night, the Miss World Australia organisation crowned 24-year-old Sophie Lavers, pictured, the 2009 contender. Presented with her crown by the 2008 Miss World Australia, Katie Richardson, Lavers will contest the global title at the Miss World final in Johannesburg on December 12. The last Australian to win the title was Belinda Green in 1972. Born in Canberra, Lavers grew up in Brisbane and lives in Kings Cross where she combines her acting studies with part-time waitressing and volunteer work for the Oasis Youth Support Network.
