Sorry Brumbies but I quit

As long time Brumbies fans we have loved our team over the years. We have been to (almost) every home game since 1996, and been season ticket holders since the stadium was remodelled. Since moving to the coast two years ago we have still been driving up for games, mostly paying to stay overnight. But I’m afraid yesterday’s performance was the straw that broke the camels back. I doubt we be back for the rest of the season (although possibly once more for the Rebels game – I like the way they play) and probably won’t renew our tickets next year.

I looked around me at one stage yesterday – the faces on the row of spectators behind me looked so bored it was hard to believe we were at a major sporting event and ,in fact, one was asleep!

Dropped ball, woeful passing, inexplicable kicking, it had it all. And if Valentine is working to a game plan with his ssllloooow delivery then the whole game is in severe danger of dying of atrophy.

So sorry, but that’s it….it was fun while it lasted.

@jadie360 re your original post, mate, that’s just pathetic. One season outside the top 6 and you’re running away. What kind of season ticket holder are you?

I agree. How dare you expect to be entertained, jadie360. What are you, some kind of narcissist?

While I certainly understand your pain, one of the things about being the supporter of a team is that you support them through good times and bad.

I supported the AFL quite a lot when I was a kid. I follow Fremantle which growing in Western Sydney meant I got bagged heaps for following AFL and then even more when for following a team on the other side of the country. Then to doubler my pain they never made the finals and in 2001 only managed to win 1 game.

They are still yet to win a premiership however they are currently 3rd this year and are likely to have a massive chance at winning in the next 2-3 years. I never gave up on them, even when they had all sorts of issues at the club both on and off the field. Having said that, I find myself supporting the new GWS club quite a bit. Unsure who I’ll support once they join next year.

You must support your team through good and bad. All clubs go through strong and weak times. Look where Penrith were before they won the 2003 NRL premiership. Or Brisbane Lions before winning three in a row (2001-2003) or Sydney Swans, 70something years without a premiership. Or even QLD Reds a few years back who are now the top Australian team.

Not sure it’s the losing but the way they’re playing. They don’t seem to have any imagination in attack.

Why pay $50 for a seat, beer and food when you can go down to the Woden bus interchange and pay some bogan $5 to kick you in the nuts. It’s probably a bit more fun as well…

I was fairly certain someone was going to make this comment and wasn’t disappointed.
You are wrong. It is a big commitment for us to pay $220 for our membership, travel a 5 hour round trip, pay $100+ for overnight accommodation, plus fuel both for us and the car. And yeah I do think I am entitled to more bang for my buck.
We will probably stay on as “supporter” members but no more visiting the stadium for us until whatever is going wrong at the Brumbies changes.

That’s probably fair enough. Make sure you pass on the feedback to the Bumblies as well, if you haven’t already. Just tell them its like conceding another ill-disciplined penalty in defence and they should understand.

Highlight of the game for me: as the Force subs jogged around keeping warm during the first half, someone in the crowd called out to one of them “Hey mate, I’ll give you the money for a haircut, it’s only 20 bucks.” One of the other Force subs called back “Spend it on a gym membership – that’s only 10.” The laugh that got from everyone who heard it was the most animated I saw the crowd all night.

+1!

I also have been to the majority of Brumbies homes games and now seem to always walk out each week disappointed.
It’s not just the dull footy but there used to be exciting half time entertainment, something other than ‘sprints’, there was the occasional fireworks to kick things off, the occasional ski-diver, sled dogs etc.
I suppose we still get to see Brumby Jack lunge at the tackle bag, it’s riveting stuff and as good ol Cam says ‘it never gets old’.

I may renew my memberships as I want to stick with them but sitting through each game bored certainly makes think hard about it.

I had originally intended to cancel my almost decade long membership at the end of last season, mostly due to a growing ambivalence toward sport in general than anything specific to the Brumbies, but ended up renewing anyway. Whoops.

At times this year I’ve been the Brumbies staunchest critic. But when the camera showed the injured cattle sitting in the stands last night I was reminded of just how much firepower they’re missing: Elsom, Hoiles, Chapman, Edmonds, Moore, Speight, not to mention other guys who have been in and out all season with injury (AAC, McCabe, Lealiifano). We had a fourth string hooker by the name of Elvis on the field last night! Come on – what do you expect?

It’s a very expensive way to get very poor entertainment.

But that hasn’t stopped Tiresome Tim haranguing the fans on the beast this morning attacking the character of fans who’ve had enough of the club.

Just wait – they will blame the weather on teh crowd, the time of the day, the war in Iraq.

They won’t accept blame for poor crowds due to rubbish football, stupid internal politics, the fact the Brumbies seem more interested in becoming property developers than a football club etc.

I believe the Brumbies are in big trouble as a club as their core supporters have given up on them…

I was offered free tickets and turned them down because the couple of games I went to at the start of the season were woeful, why waste my time?
