Soulfood Kitchen - a review

Friday nights can sometimes leave one wondering what to cook for dinner. It’s the end of the week, you’re tired, don’t want to make a big fuss in the kitchen, but need to feed a hungry family who might not be happy with my choice of an lowly omelette. That was just the case in my house the week just gone – although as I’m so organised I planned ahead to be lazy. Having seen Soulfood Kitchen the last time we ate out around Erindale, we decided to give it a go.

As you can make out from the website http://www.soulfoodkitchen.com.au, Soulfood Kitchen is based around southern American style cooking, particularly that hailing from New Orleans. Having been there many years ago and being a bit smitten with the food, I was curious to see how it has been re-created.

We were the first ones in. Very early I have to say due to Master Cholet being only 5, but that was not a problem. We were greeted, seated and handed menus. Orders taken and drinks (they’re licenced) brought all in a jiffy, which is great when you have a hungry child on your hands. No problems with us not ordering a specific meal for our son either. A plate was readily added to the table for him and he was amply served form our plates.

I’m a sucker for ribs. The bigger the better, with lashings of bbq sauce and cooked until the meat is falling off the bone. I can’t deny we only went there to eat ribs. The large rack of ribs is served with sweet potato chips and salad. I can’t recall if I have had better American style ribs than this, but these certainly hit the spot for all of us.

The menu is not large, so if you are looking for much past ribs, shrimp, chicken or fish then you may be disappointed, but I reckon that it is all worth tasting. They cater for breakfast (weekend), lunch & dinner, including takeaway.

Dessert options are very small – two items. But honestly, if you are really hanging out for dessert after eating one of these meals then there’s maybe something wrong. Anyhow, we gave the Key Lime Cheesecake a go. Not as limey as I recall the original Key Lime pie from the US and certainly not green (although that’s probably no longer allowed or wanted due to the green colour historically being from a bottle). We shared our slice – more than enough for three to have a taste.

We weren’t alone in there for long. According to Victor the chef who came around and spoke with all the diners, that night was his busiest after a few weeks of quiet times. Seems the trend has changed for them which is great to hear as it’s in a difficult spot for a new business – the last iteration of this location was a great Vietnamese place which had been there for donkeys years. The atmosphere could probably be better, again a better location would add something. There’s an old piano in the corner and BB King in concert was on a loop. Missing a certain something, but then again it was pretty early and it got quite busy as we were eating. Apparently it is best to book if you want to guarantee ribs, which I can understand as these things don’t just materialise with a few minutes cooking.

We were out in about an hour, but had enough of a nice time that we would go back. Service was friendly. Food was tasty and filling. Not cheap for a ‘can’t be bothered to cook’ Friday night, but then again it was probably a cut above the usual ‘how about Thai?’ for want of another choice. Would be nice with other adults as well, rather than a hungry and tired five year old.

Had the ribs as takeaway once. thought they were average but exceedingly overpriced. I usually love this style of cooking.

Is there anywhere in Canberra that does good take-away ribs? I love some good ribs, but they are too messy to eat in public! I can only enjoy them in the comfort of my own home.

Arnold’s ribs and Pizza Tuggeranong.

I’ll be housesitting in Tuggeranong in July, it’s totally going to be our first take out meal.

I agree Arnolds are good. Ive had an appalling run with their home delivery though. Just a shambles.

You could make your own, pick up a rack or 2 from Costco, do your own rub and follow the basics of this recipe below.

Yep, I can (and do) make my own. But that involves some prior planning…and usually when I feel the need for ribs it is after I might have had one or two too many refreshing ales to take a trip to the supermarket!

On those occasions I just want to be able to make a phone call and forty minutes later a foil container of ribs is delivered to my front door!

Interesting as we have been to La Piazza and always found it wanting in terms of service. I once went in there with a friend and our children and was told no one could take my order as their ‘handheld ordering devices’ were not working. I suggested that he either get a piece of paper and a pen or try to remember ‘two coffees and two milkshakes’. I’ve also eaten there during the periods when meals are discounted and not had the discount applied – an odd mistake to make when the period is their stated ‘happy hour’. On an $80 bill 20 or 25% can be pretty significant.

I haven’t been to soul food due to the pricing and lack of interest in the menu (I don’t like spicy much either), but re La Piazza I think you would find it may have changed recently. there has been a change in management with the previous uninterested management moving on and the new ones very keen to get it back to its brilliant past level of service. but the best thing about Erindale, you are not short of choices no matter what your preference.

After reading a lot of reviews it sounds like this place isn’t what it is cracked up to be. The majority of people complain about bad service, too expensive, small servings, bad opening times, etc.

I’ll probably give it a miss.

I only tried to dine there once, left, and won’t go back.

When we went a few months ago, the restaurant was about half full. It was really dark (making it hard to read the menu) and we were plonked right in front of the pianola but they had the TV (above our heads) blaring out some non New Orleans type music. The only two things on the menu we willing to spend the money on (ribs and buffalo wings from memory) – they’d run out of! I used that as my reason to get the heck out of there.

We went around the corner, had a brilliant meal which was reasonably priced at La Piazza which has since become a family favourite.

I didn’t think that Soul Food’s limited menu and high price is good enough to tempt me back after my last experience.

I’d be interested to hear if they’re a hot and cold type establishment, or if you get consistent service/food/nice dining experience.

Thanks for the review!

Well, I and my family have eaten there several times, including one Sunday brunch, and the food has been outstanding every time! The prices are a bit high, but definitely represent excellent value for money.

The service is generally very good but sometimes a little spotty; but I understand (from other customers, not from the chef/owner) that there is a bit of a problem finding employees who will do the job well AND stick with it. This matches my experience in other restaurants in Canberra that aren’t in Civic or the major town centres.

The only complaint I have about SFK is that I personally can’t enjoy highly hot-spiced food, and most of the menu consists of fairly-to-very spicy dishes (I usually go to SFK with family or friends, most of whom love all the spice). The breakfast we went to was the best for my taste buds. I understand that Victor is now serving more “winter warmers,” such as creamy Clam Chowder, but I haven’t been there yet to try them out.

My family used to go to Victor’s restaurant in Sydney, many years ago. We were very, very disappointed when we found he’d closed up and moved away. We stumbled on his new place in Canberra completely by accident, and were thrilled to find out it was the same guy. His menu in his Sydney SFK was more extensive, but then, this is Canberra — Erindale, no less! Menu reduction no surprise, really. But when each dish is a rewarding little jewel, fewer to choose from is not a problem!

I agree with the good food, however I find that the restaurant is frequently closed for private functions (especially on Friday nights) and they don’t do takeaway after 6pm.

I’d like to endorse the comments about the food. I went there with a mate just to try something different and had a great meal. We met Victor, the owner/chef, and he said his philosophy was to have people feel like family. Worked for me.

I next saw Victor at the Snowy Hydro Open Day when our band – The Old 45s – were playing to support the chopper and he invited us to play some driving rock and roll at the restaurant. we did just two Fridays ago to a packed house. The place rocked. He said he wanted to do it again. buffet with R&R! How good can it get?

Keep an eye out for the next one….
