South-East Asian Islamic art at NGA

Helen Musa over at the Canberra Times had a sneak preview yesterday of some of the treasures and religious artefacts that are going on display at the National Gallery of Australia.

Crescent Moon: Islamic Art & Civilisation in South-East Asia opens to the public on 24-FEB-06 and features 180 art treasures on loan from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, the Philippines and Myanmar. The gallery says it is the first ever international exhibition of Islamic art from the region.

Artefacts on display include crowns, swords, scabbards, carvings and ornately decorated Korans.

the prohibition on the prophets image is one of the least adhered to edicts in the koran or hadith.

the original aim was to ensure that recent idol and animist worshippers didnt slip back. one could say that outdated law were never repealed.

many collections of islamic art – including those in iran and saudi, feature images of humans and the prophet. one of the finest collections of islamic art outside the muslim world is the calouste gulbenkian museum in lisbon. it also feature humans and the prophet depicted in respectful ways.

so if you believe the fundamentalists – that depicting a human image is wrong – then you are falling for their divisive and simplistic propaganda.
