New to the berra. What are some good places?

I am used to the recreational drug taking, punk music listening generally ‘alternative’ crowd. Not interested in the usual go to the footy club and down schooners, or hit the clubs in civic. Looking for somewhere different. Ideas?

Can I say that here? – yes, I believe you can.

Mælinar = ska and guinness fan, bigtime.

lol i think youll find that the houseparty scene now has the likes of bands such as sex sepuku and gunkai involved(if anyone remembers the insanity of the matt davies 5 day party)

Samuel, if you find an in to the house party scen, let me know. 😉

Somehow, I’ve fallen out of the loop.

Thanks for the informative responses. Will def check these places out.

And to whoever mentioned house parties, you’re absolutely right. house parties >>>>> any other gathering.

And Pandy can eat a dick. Can I say that here?

Samuel Beckett must die.

BMA Magazine will tell you where the gigs are on and when. You can pick it up at cool clothes and music shops in Civic.

I like your style Sam!

Faster Louder is the punk/rock/alternative sister site for inthemix. Go to http://www.fasterlouder.com.au/ they have forums for each state.

Bar32, The Greenroom and Transit Bar are probably bars that you’d appreciate. ANU Bar have some gigs coming up to, check out http://www.anuunion.com.au/displaypage.cfm?pageID=71

Go to the phoenix – not quite on the southside but a cheap cab fare away in the civic bus interchange. You will meet every imaginable freak, sorry alternate type, in Canberra there.

Sammy boy, You are cordially invited to drop into the Royal Hotel at Queanbeyan any time after 11pm. I think it might provide just what you’re seeking.

Not always, but they sometimes have punk/hardcore type gigs at ‘the venue’ in Erindale. Its got a bit of a dive vibe to it, but that’s mostly the centre its in. Their band area is actually really big and good. I would like to see more gigs there.

Bar32 holds ‘DIY’ shows every second weekend as ‘Gangbusters’ – genres change but its usually pretty cool fun. A lot of the other stuff is northside – the Front for more alternative/obscure type things – generally pretty quiet. The Basement in Belco holds a lot of AA HxC shows.

Being a Canberran now, ‘southside’ shouldn’t be a limitation. Outer suburbs aside, you can go end to end in well under an hour.

Actually, come to think of it, either of the uni bars (but not the uni pub) would probably be just what you’re looking for. Not exactly southside though. :/

Firstly, stay away from the cynical nastiness of RiotACT. The punters here are all too old to have fun, and are good at yelling at “themdamnkids” and their anti-social behaviour.

Then go check out http://www.inthemix.com.au and look at the Canberra Clubber’s forum (http://www.inthemix.com.au/forum/forumdisplay.php?forumid=3) – sure, it’s a bit more clubby than punk, but it’s a closer match for you than the homebrew/bbq scene here.

Another option is the Canberra LiveJournal community – http://community.livejournal.com/canberra/ – and maybe check out The Venue in erindale. (www.the-venue.com.au).

Better yet, once you find a like-minded group of people to hang out with, go to house parties where you don’t have to put up with the typical elitist Canberran.

Lastly, don’t let this get you down. Canberra has nice people, you just have to look a bit harder. 😉

one the many fine ‘gentlemans saunas’ in Fyshwick perhaps?
