Speed Cameras for Victims

In budget related news the CT has this interesting piece on how a $10 increase in the fines from Traffic Infringement Notices (TIN’s) and court fines will be levied towards a soon to be amalgamated Victims of Crime Co-ordinator’s office and Victims Services Schemes. While getting law breakers to fund victim of crime support services is an idea I applaud surely a more just method would be to use assets seized using the current proceeds of crime legislation (perhaps funding that area to be able to do more with it?) and/or substantially increasing court fines, hitting those sectors of the community that actually commit serious crimes.

Likewise the analysis of the increase of funds from TIN’s, due in the main from the increase in the number of speed cameras, shows no indication that they expect the cameras to have any deterrent effect of driver behaviour. Along with no apparent driver education initiatives is seems that speed cameras (and certain outcome agreements – heaven forbid that they be called quotas – with the ACT Police) are designed to supply a steady source of Government funding rather than have any meaningful reduction in the number of motor vehicle accidents and therefore insurance costs, injury and loss of life in the ACT.

Such levies should be directly linked to the benefit. e.g. the sugar levy benefited sugar growers. Where’s the link between traffic infringements and victims of crime? A levy on alcohol served at pubs would be more appropriate.

..could be used to fun the government…

or Fund the government. If it was fun they were after they wouldn’t need to sell all the drugs.

I frequently hear that the police have confiscated $50,000 worth of pot or $100,000 worth of ecstasy. Surely THAT money could be used to fun the government….

shock horror – a politician lied !! Goes with the concepts of core and non-core promises.

I have been in contact with TAMS on how they identified the locations for the new fixed speed cameras. The Minister said all the information was available on the web and that a committee recommends the sites to him. The committee (Traffic Liaison Committee) was disbanded last year and the latest statistics available on the website are from 2004! Hargreaves lied on 666 on Tuesday 15 May. Less than .02percent of drivers passing mobile speed cameras are booked. And they say we have a speeding problem in Canberra…

Do we really need “driver education initiatives” to know that speeding is against the law, and that you’ll cop a fine if caught? And what’s wrong with the government having a steady source of funding, especially if it’s taken from our dumbest citizens? Don’t want the government to use you for revenue raising? Don’t f*cking speed. Too thick to work that out? Then thanks for paying the Voluntary Tax on D*ckheads and subsidising my law-abiding lifestyle.

pokies and speed cameras. great base for your budget john.

crazy as a coconut.
