Speed cushions on Flinders Way get the thumbs up

Mayor Rattenbury has announced victory in Griffith over unsafe traffic.

“In May 2011 speed cushions were installed to improve road safety as well as reduce vehicle speeds and traffic volumes along Flinders Way between Murray Crescent and Mugga Way,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“Following the installation of the speed cushions, average speeds in sections of Flinders Way have decreased between 10 and 18 kilometres per hour. Traffic volumes have also decreased between 8 per cent and 32 per cent, without pushing the traffic volumes on identified alternative routes beyond their acceptable road limit.

“Short term data indicates improved road safety with a decrease in the number of crashes when comparing the 10 month periods before and after the installation of the speed cushions.”

In March and April 2012 the ACT Government sought community feedback on the effectiveness of the speed cushions.

“As a result of this feedback the ACT Government will make some modifications, including changes to the size and spacing of the speed cushions. The distance between the cushions and parked vehicles will also be modified to improve bicycle safety,” Mr Rattenbury said.

These improvements will be implemented in December 2012 and are expected to cost approximately $50,000.

Aaaaahh….It can be done….now for Spofforth st..Surely their average crash figures must have dropped by now.

Have fun residents of Flinders Way. These cushions are great for raising the tyre just a tad to start off an amazing burn out. Have a look at others around the place for the think black burn out marks.

I’m no expert but how the phark can an ‘average’ be between 10 and 18?
Should it not be 14?

They look like cushions, they’re made of plastic. you can move them around in ways you can’t with concrete speed humps.

speed cushions it is.

Though they are not comfy, which is the defining quality of cushions. Inarguably.

“Speed cushions.” This is newspeak, isn’t it? Doubleplus ungood.

FFS well in that case let’s do something really intelligent and put them in every major suburban street in Canberra just to really piss me off. Here’s an idea how about we actually use a bit of nous and cull the licenced clueless zombies who cause the problem in the first place.

As someone who used to drive a truck down Flinders Way quite frequently, I can say that those damned speed cushions slowed me down by a lot more than 10-18km/hr.
