Spence shops ?!

Does anyone know what is going on here ?

What was a handy little shopping centre is going to the dogs. The convenience store (I use this term loosely) is so run down it’s not funny. You have to check the use by date on the milk every time. Lots of empty shelf space and practically tumbleweeds down the aisles.

The fast food shop is gone, apparently being replaced by a pharmacy. Thank goodness for a decent butcher and bakery. These shops are great but they are only part of the answer.

I wasn’t aware we had a suburb called Spence. Where is it?

On the way out to Hall and Murrumbateman.

Anyone who thinks a fence is gonna stop vandals ought to come and visit Giralang shops! If anything the fence actually makes it worse as it provides a nice barrier between the vandals and the very occasional security patrols.

One thought comes to mind, guard dogs. Lets see those vandals find and climb the fence while being chased by a guard dog. Pity the masses would have something to say about that though.

The bakery has some of the best pies in the north of Canberra. So worth a visit for that. The rest has always been a bit ho hum.

Some bright spark had the idea of boarding up the windows with plywood too, which is doing a great job of providing the local kids with a never-ending source of materials for building skate ramps!

CapitalK is on the money. The shop was running down its stock because it was going to be sold. The sale has since fallen though, however in spite of some assurances that the owner is back and restocking I can’t say I’ve noticed any change. The takeaway left, at least in part, because the run-down, not-always-open-when-it-says-it-is supermarket had cost him a bucketload in walk-in trade.

So I’ve gathered, at least, from various signs and talking to the takeaway owner.

Can’t rememeber if it was Spence or Melba – but one of them was sold recently (last few months), maybe it fell through and the owners are deciding what to do.

Just aside from Spence, has anyone noticed that Holt Primary School has now be ringed by the ubiquitous construction fence of death?

The fence is in response to the spray paint and vandalism of the past few months. Problem is, when I checked last week, the fence only went part of the way round. I assume it will be completed at some stage. Should take the little maggots about 20 seconds to climb it before they continue their rampage.

Holt was in last week’s Chronicle. It was badly vandalised, and the government says it will now start to ‘refurbish’ (ie, make sure it can’t be a school again, ever, so there).

Surely Spence is getting a refurb. About time.

The Spence shops have never been great. I lived in Spence between 1991-2007 and would hardly ever use the facilities execpt for the hair dresser. The takeaway has changed hands so many times I lost count. The IGA is over priced and understocked, it would only be used for a loaf of bread and bottle of milk in the most dire of situations.

Tax write off?!?!?!
