Lloyd – I’m with you, spiders are terrifying and I am all fine with them living in hippies houses. I don’t have hippy friends, so this works well for me. Go with manns pest control. Reliable and efficient. They gas my house yearly, and be rid of the spiders and be happy and safe.

They don’t like the snakes, so they flatten the greenery.
They can’t take the spiders so they Baygon the halls.
And they bulldozed Culburra till it looked like Parramatta.
God! I wonder why they ever went movin’ at all.

It’s somewhere in the car,
Lord, it’s somewhere in the car.
The cabin light’s not working
And the night is deathly dark.
You know there’s matches somewhere
But you don’t know where they are.
And the bloody thing is somewhere in the car.

What is it with these Drummond boys and spiders?

Nuke the entire site from orbit. Its the only way to be sure.

E & T Pest control are the best I’ve used. Think they are Yass based but do most of their work in Canberra. Came highly recommended and I was/am still very happy with the job. We had a real white tail problem in the house and redbacks etc outside but since he came we’ve seen nothing for a couple of months. Very reasonable and cheaper than anyone else too. Used several of the well known larger companies over previous years and saw spiders and other creepies within several days/weeks. No surprise really as they did the job so quickly and one told me he didn’t like to do bedrooms as people sleep there when that was the main problem area! Charged plenty for it though.

He also does a lot of schools, restaurants and I think hospitals too.

I always found the Yellow Pages quite useful in this respect….not for the contents but for slamming against spiders.

Re the spider problem, you don’t have to be a spider fan just because others are. Personally they creep me out. Just pest-bomb the house. You can get pest bombs at supermarkets. They are mainly pyrethrin. Once you’ve bombed the place they continue to ‘work’ for about three months on roaches and fleas (because of the way they function). While they only work on spiders on the day you bomb, that’s usually enough to eliminate them. Generally you will need one can per room. Follow the instructions – take pets and pot plants outside, cover the gold fish, turn off the fridge, leave house for two hours before airing thoroughly, etc. It’s easy and effective.
I find I only have to bomb the place once every couple of years.

I currently have 3 huntsman living in my house. They are great at controlling other pests.

Explain.

Tee hee! [For new Rioters, this is an ‘in joke’ – most of Comic’s comments are, irritatingly, ‘Source?’ or ‘Explain.’]

The problem with this approach is the (often more dangerous to us humans) prey recover before the predator. That is often the case with redbacks moving back in before their predator species.

Its easy to explain, Huntsmen spider eat other spiders and insects and best of all don’t spin webs either!! Contrary to what some people may think, they rarely bite people, I once put a shoe on and a huntsman was inside, I felt something took the shoe off and it crawled out and up the wall. I didn’t get bitten at all.
Whenever there is a huntsman or two around I notice very other spiders and bugs.

Spiders eats mites and bugs that maybe you can’t see. They are your friend, enjoy their company. They do not attack.

I found that the professional treatment was quite expensive ($300+) and seemed fairly ineffective (and if you get rain all the treatment washes away if exposed). Spray pack from Bunnings did the trick outside – and try and make the inside unattractive for small insects which spiders will come and eat (and setup camp in your home). Also seal gaps etc.

be nice to boris!

There is usually no need to control other species of spider [than funnelweb, redbacks and white-tailed spiders]. If an orb-weaving spider consistently builds a web across a frequently-used path, the spider may be moved to a safer site.

Black House or Window Spiders are shy, and are quick to hide in the retreat at the back of their webs if disturbed. Webs are often made in the corners of windows, and may have a funnel-shaped retreat in which the spider shelters. The web may be removed using a broom, or a stick (the same method as for Redbacks), and the spider deposited outside.

It should be noted that Black House Spiders are known to kill and eat Redback Spiders, and that their presence may reduce the chances of large Redback populations becoming established in your area. On the other hand, they are a favoured food of the White-tailed Spider.

Wandering spiders such as wolf spiders and huntsman spiders are best dealt with on an individual basis when encountered. They should be left alone if in the garden, or removed from a house using a broom. They are fast moving, but not normally aggressive.

Huntsman spiders can be disconcerting when they jump off walls to make their escape, or appear unexpectedly in your car. Make sure car windows and doors are closed when the car is parked – particularly at night. If a spider is found in a car but evades capture, it can be encouraged to leave by parking the car in a warm place.
