Spiegel-What-The-Hell?

One of the big attractions in the Centenary 100 celebrations, for me anyway, was the Famous Spiegeltent having a season in the Parliamentary Rose Gardens. I was kinda hoping there’d be a range of good quality music, cabaret and performances to watch, the same as Spiegeltent seasons have had in Melbourne and Sydney in the past.

There may very well still be that kinda stuff. I can’t tell because, despite the season being a month away, they’ve announced precisely NONE of what’s going to be on in there. Currently on the website there’s a notice saying:

Thank you for your patience regarding the delayed availability of the Canberra season program. The planned released of the program on January 9 was delayed for a number of reasons although be assured the season will be going ahead. The program will be accessible from this page as soon as the details are finalised.

Spiegeltent International

Waiting 20 days before saying “we still don’t know what we’re doing” doesn’t fill me with confidence that we’re going to get anything even vaguely special. Does anybody know anything as to why this looks like such a massive cluster?

Katy Gallagher is still falsely advertising it as the “famous spiegeltent” in the program that arrived in my letterbox today. I think they should ‘fess up that Canberra got bumped by the Spiegeltent owners, who clearly think that “Neurotic Ladyland” and “Papa Pilko” are more deserving of the old glam venue than, well, Paul McDermott, Shout Brothers, Gadflys, George Washingmachine, the Falling Joys … no doubt there was an almighty stoush about it which led to this very lame “satisfy the legalities” “spiegel garden”, but it doesn’t say much for Robyn “Centenary Loop” Archer’s clout that she missed out for us. Thanks a motza! How this afterthought could possibly create anything like the atmospherics of an old mirror tent, without very, very considerable investment, would seem unlikely. Tssk tsssk – and the spiegeltent owners are ex-Canberrans.

Could you descipher this for those of us not au fait with all the latest arty bitterness?

Pfft…Spiegeltents are everywhere. I saw a show in Sydney last week in a Spiegaltent. Half naked acrobats, top show too. The mirrors of the tent just let me see boobs X 100.

well you sold me.

The Speigel Tent website has finally named some acts here: https://tfs.tickets.red61.com/

That’s because the Spiegeltent 1. has tickets on itself and 2. the detail probably rests with some personal or business connection between our “Centenary Loop” and the Spiegeltent operators, and they are probably wrestling with Melbourne demands on the tent’s time. Just what that faux-rococo-revival-neo-fag-plush-boutique (to paraphrase Germaine) Melbourne institution will add to the Canberra centenary without confusing it further is questionable. It has zero historicaly connection with canberra; has zero aesthetic design features (unless you are “ironic” around the inter-war Berlin cabaret feel); and looks to be yet another weird and misdirected, “just grab whatever is around” superimposition on Canberra’s centenary year. FAIL!

Hang on, they are in Melbourne till April. So how are they going to get an act together to Canberra?
