Just a quick message to let you know RiotACT has a new sponsor.

The Canberra Musician’s Club (CMC) is new player on the scene and is trying to do a few big, new, things.

Before I go on I’d just like to be clear that this sponsorship arrangement does not mean we are going stop promoting non-CMC events, keep ’em coming.

The vision of the club is to operate a venue, run by and for people who love music. With no pokies, and no annoying bistro announcements.

But until that happy day arrives they have more pressing operational goals.

Things such as organising public liability insurance for members who are putting on public events, as well as providing technical and logistic support to performers.

For those of us who are not actually musicians at all there are still benefits:

— discounted entry to all Canberra Musician’s Club events
— entry to CMC member-only events
— regular updates of club activities

Members only events will include such things as the previously public and very popular Backyard Backanalias.

Other events coming up under the CMC banner include:

Cashews Launch:

Saturday 16 August, 4-10.30pm, tonnes of bands, Tableaux Vivant, Pablo the Clown, sausage sizzle, licensed.

Pasha’s Lounge:

Pasha’s Lounge, at DNA (Ralph Wilson) Theatre, Gorman House, is the first totally CMC run gig. It’s on Saturday 23 August, 8pm-midnight, and the acts booked so far are Sanji de Silva, Matt Dent, Big Score, The Glaciers, Ocean Moses and possibly The Guests. They have in mind a sort of harem affair, a tent structure around the stage, rugs and cushions on the floor, lounges etc. Anyone with a half decent couch they want to get rid of, drop it at the DNA early on the night and the club will dispose of it afterwards.

The Launch

The Canberra Musician’s Club will be launched in grand style at the Albert Hall on Sat, 13th Sep, 2008 in a twelve hour extravaganza of local music, food, dancing and general frivolity that is not to be missed. Cardboard Charlie, CIT’s Creative Industry Centre, and Folkus are collaborating with the CMC to present an extraordinary array of Canberra’s local musical talent in genres of pop, rock, folk, jazz, choral music and latin dance, along with circus performances, buskers, a Guerilla Gig and much more. They ask you to join them to celebrate the advent of a new force in Canberra’s cultural community.

Anyway, here at RiotACT we’re thrilled to be involved in something we think will be really exciting.

For anyone concerned about my own position in both organisations rest assured I was not involved in the negotiations or deliberations on either side.

My apologies for such a late response.

Questions.

To what extent are they going to try and include musicians from a wide variety of genres (metal, rock, hip hop?)? The CMC is not restrictive in genre. The members can promote shows with such bands as they see fit.

I guess the question is will it be an exlusive club for a few musos of certain genres or will it be open to all and sundry? The CMC is open to all and sundry, as you put it.

Contact details for the organisation maybe? ourcmc@gmail.com

Who is running it and what actual industry experience do they have? It’s run by the people behind the Backyard Backanalias amongst other things.

“The vision of the club is to operate a venue, run by and for people who love music”. Does this mean that they won’t be supporting existing venues? We have been supporting music in existing venues for years and will continue to do so. Our club is designed to add to the industry, not compete with it.

Wow. That logo really sucks. Alot.

I don’t know that it’s all that bad. Could have been a bit more stylised, possibly. It does follow the rich tradition of the letters forming the guitar, like one of my mobs: http://www.folkalliance.org.au/

I’ll probably join, though I’m just a little over-subscribed with subscriptions at the moment!

Facebook is here: http://www.new.facebook.com/group.php?gid=20356054916&ref=ts
Website is here but their host died this morning hence the lack of a link in the story: http://www.canberramusiciansclub.org.au/

Other questions shall be put it El Presidente

It sounds really good but more details maybe?

Do they have a website/myspace facebook or anything like that?

As I said, it sounds good, but more details please.

But good luck to the CMC.
