Sports bars? Where can I watch the NBA playoffs? Fox/ESPN?

Hey Canberrans,

I’m new to Canberra and a fan of the obscure foreign sport of “basketball”, you may know it.

Anyway, it’s playoffs time in the US and I don’t have ESPN or Fox. Does anyone know a bar or similar where I could catch the odd game over the coming weeks?

Sorry if this post is somewhat frivolous… but I had no one else to turn to.

Thanks.

The Belco labour club used to have ESPN, just got back from there tonight apparently they ended their subscription. D’oh

I think the games aren’t shown regularly (every day) until they get into the Conference Finals. Go Celtics!!

ESPN’s basketball coverage is much better than their soccer which looks like they stream it directly from you tube!!

Fox shows at least 2 live games per week and more un-live games also.
ESPN also show games, but they are hopeless crap quality and not in widescreen.

NBA is normally on during the day time and during the week when it doesnt clash with NRL, AFL or premierleague so you might be in luck asking for the channel to be changed.

I’m curious to know where you actually found a time when Fox is showing a game. I was beginning to think I wouldn’t even be able to sit at home and watch the play-offs.

Southern Cross Club has been good in previous years for Superbowl coverage

Sorry if this post is somewhat frivolous…

Frivolous is what we do best :o)

The Fighthouse in Belco is running some sort of cheap beer/watch basketball thing.

Also try All Bar Nun in O’Connor.

But as neanderthalsis says, you will probably need to ask for it to be switched on. Perhaps if you try and call a club/pub before hand to arrange that might get you a better success rate. I know Eastlakes Footy Club (in Kingston) often screens AFL on Foxtel for some of the local AFL supporter clubs around town. Hopefully a club/pub near you will do the same.

The Hellenic Club in Woden has ESPN and has shown them on the big screen in years gone past…

A couple of suggestions:

Civic Pub in Braddon
Kingston pub, Kingston
Belconnen Soccor Club
most Labor clubs

But be prepared to ask for it, and expect arguements if there is Rugby / league / AFL / Soccor / Indian Premier League Cricket / lawn bowls or Croquet on instead.
