Hi,

I am looking to join a sports or other social club in Canberra to get involved in the community and to meet some new friends. Anyone knows any interesting groups in Canberra?

It may seem out there and they are a bit quirky but the Scrabble club that meets in Woden on Wednesday nights and Thursday mornings are great fun. The Scrabble they play is incredibly different to kitchen table. It’s tough at first but very rewarding and addictive.

They hold regular tournaments on weekends as well which are more social than competitive.

Check out Meetup! Plenty of groups on there. Most are catered to individual preferences

Also Gungahlin Parkrun advertised they had around 180 runners this morning. Find them on Facebook

‘The Movie Group’ is a popular social group who get together to each week see some of the latest blockbusters at the cinema, short film festivals, outdoor movies and more.

Board Gamers Meet today in Gungahlin, another fun bunch:

I am a member of the Vikings group of clubs but I don’t attend any of their premises regularly because I live in Queanbeyan.
I’m pretty sure that aside from their Rugby Union activities, they have cycling and fishing members.
Just going to their Friday night raffles will give you a chance to engage socially with like minded souls.

I can personally vouch for the fine folk at Navmat Dragon Boat Club. A nice way to meet many and varied folk, and a great way to appreciate the lake.

And I endorse qbngeek’s recommendation of Canberra Games Society.

there are quite a lot of active Canberra focussed social groups on Meet-up. some general and some topic specific if you have particular interests.

It depends what you like to do. There are many sports and social clubs around. Some sports clubs have a more social feel than others, I personally choose sports clubs with a strong social aspect so I can meet people and do things other than the sport.

If you are keen on board/card/war games, I recommend Canberra Games Society. These games are a great way to get to meet people and are becoming more mainstream and not just for geeks.

I participate in two shooting sports and find both clubs are pretty social and friendly.

What are you into?

I can think of at least one interesting group. Facebook search ‘Hundred Swords Canberra’ for starters.
