Spotlights above Woden?

The title “Spotlights over Woden” is a little misleading, the pedantic would say the lights were probably on the ground, but pointing towards the sky. Nonetheless.

About three or four spotlights were shining into the night sky last night, at around 8pm (but I wasn’t paying attention to the time), just above Woden from my point of view in Pearce. They were moving around in a pattern, as though they were spotting something within a 1km diameter. This went on for about an hour, but once I ran out of cigarettes I had less initiative to stare blankly into the sky so I soon lost interest.

Perhaps related, there were flashes of lightning further towards tuggers.

Any thoughts?

its the light to which all pokie addicts are drawn too.. similar to moths to floodlights etc… attracts grannies from all parts of canberra

The lightning flashes from tuggeranong were actually from a big storm that did the usual – missed us completely and tracked around canberra completely. It was a pretty good display.

They’re also referred to as sky-trackers, often used throughout Disney’s and other’s theme parks in the US.

Someone told me that the Southern Cross club had an opening for their new auditorium/theatre. There was apparently a red carpet and paparazzi and the whole hollywood shebang…

well that cleared that up.. i thought it might’ve been the hellenic club but didn’t think the attraction would be worth the effort negotiating the right with the airspace authority

I was driving in Woden most of the evening thursday, and can confirm the lights were coming from the top of the southern cross carpark. As Ozhair pointed out, the Hellenic club often uses the same lights in the same way, wandering across the clouds.

There was also a lot of flashing coming from the mawson area too. Seemed like camera flashes but they were too bright and visible from too far away to be a camera.

Definitely the Southern Cross Club – saw them testing the big pivoting lights next to the front door yesterday afternoon.

Some of the clubs around town occasionally bring in the old “celebrity spotlights” that shine up into the sky when they have special events. I think the Helenic club do it every now and then. It was probably something along those lines.

Apparently the Southern Cross Club were having a Batman night, the lights were part of that. True Story!

This has been happening down in Wanniassa too. I thought they were the reflection from car headlights from the low cloud cover so didn’t think anything of it.They looked like they were just moving around freely. Weird.
