Simon Corbell has announced that the ACT Government is going to contribute $20,000 to repair the vandalised gravestones at St Johns in Reid.

Mr Corbell said as Minister responsible for heritage matters, and as a citizen of this city, I was dismayed to see the mindless destruction of these historic gravesites.

“While it is difficult to quantify at this stage what steps can be taken to restore these gravesites and repair the damage that has been done, the Government will offer $20,000 to assist with any measures which may be identified as suitable.

“I have asked the Heritage unit in my portfolio to liaise with the Church in this regard.

Its just dead space. Better to bulldoze it and build something productive.

I think I am strating to understand your posting about drugs and mental illness in another thread.

Really yet you miss the obvious. Even MrMagoo said “Maybe then and only then will they truly understand what their reckless, random and mindless actions result in. Loss and sorrow for others. I’m so really mad about this, vandalism s**** me!!!” and +1 by PB

I was just presenting a valid opinion based on history that no one challenged beyond the usual personal insults. If it is not clear now then it never will be. If you are hell bent on presenting only a couple 100 years of history then you should at least be able to question its value and how it relates to the true history of the land. Experiencing empathy for the feelings of others is a rare thing.

Okay, I have read this five times and it makes no sense to me, care to dumb it down?

Gotta agree – I’ve read it a few times as well and just can’t grasp it. Are you really saying ‘get rid’ of it?

FGZK – you seem to be quoting PB and Mr Magoo – they haven’t posted in this thread???

They should have funded the entire restoration.

Hard to believe there are idiots out there who would want to damage graves. The time has come to place video surveillance on all historic buildings and places, as nothing is safe from vandals and dropkicks it would seem.

If the Govt can manage to spend an entire budget on stupid\weird shit like fibreglass owls, whirlygig men, and piles of steel girders (ie: objects which can only be appreciated while driving), capping the contribution at $20,000 to assist restoring 160+ year local historical archaeology, cultural artefacts, and graves of your regional pioneers and predecessors is a token ‘quick whip around the office to fill an envelope’ insult.

Since the site is subject to a a CMD’s heritage order, doesn’t that mean the offenders, in addition to malicious damage, get hit with a reckless level offence under the Heritage Act 2004, Section 74?
For more on the Heritage Value of the site, for which specific conservation of grave sites is a policy.

If money is the issue and Corbell wants to be sensible, if the offender is successfully fined, match the extent of fine to the cost of restoring, in addition to the $20k Heritage chip-in.
To be sensible -and popular-, do the above and offload the Grassby back onto the Labor Party, further chipping in those proceeds to contribute to the restoration and completion of actual grave preservatio (since you’re already disturbing the burial markers anyway).

Not enough. In fact, no where near enough.

Stanhope was shelling out hundreds of thousands for public art.

This is important heritage, it needs to be conserved.

I agree – should have funded the entire restoration project.

Given that the damage has been estimated at about $20,000, isn’t that what the government is doing?

Given that St Johns faced a hefty bill for removing the old trees lining the approach and then replanting with saplings they are not that well off anyway.

should have offered more.

A sensible offer.
