Manager of the Fire Management Unit in Territory and Municipal Services, Neil Cooper, has announced that work on the stage two Mt. Franklin Fire Trail upgrades will commence today.

The upgrade is to improve fire tanker access to Namadgi National Park and has come from a recommendation made in the the McLeod report into the 2003 Canberra bushfires.

“Over 23 kilometres of the Mt Franklin Fire Trail, from the Ginini car park to the intersection with Cotter Hut Road, will be upgraded,” Mr Cooper said. “The work, which is expected to be complete by mid-September 2013 (weather permitting), will include the widening and corner realignment of the road pavement and an upgrade of the road’s drainage system.

“These works will build onstage one of the upgrade which was finalised in December 2012, and will complete the link through some of the most inaccessible country in the region.

“The upgraded section of road will allow the safe passage of heavy fire-fighting equipment needed in both fuel reduction activities and bushfire emergencies where rapid fire suppression is vital,” Mr Cooper said.

If Cradle Mountain, Uluru, Daintree etc. were located in the ACT visitors would be met with a locked gate and a burnt out stolen car… while clueless ACT pubes back in town scratch their head wondering how to make a dollar (from local tourism).

Perhaps they should visit Tassie to see how land management, recreation and conservation can work together. But now I’m way off topic.

I came across either a NSW or ACT Gov report a while back that indicated the minute Air Services Australia don’t need the road anymore, it will be blocked at Piccadilly Circus, and apparently also to reduce sediment damage to the Ramsar site.

Wouldn’t be surprised.
I’m getting kind of tired of all these lockouts. So many roads around the Cotter and in Namadgi being locked out for no real reason. About time to start keeping a pair of bolt cutters in the car I think.

The fire trail’s one thing… how much quicker could a tanker respond to a fire if the southern section of Brindabella Rd and the Piccadilly Circus junction was sealed?

Word on the street is that TAMS is happy for it to be a rotten road (especially for 2WD vehicles) so Canberrans don’t venture up to this beautiful part of the Brindabellas – if they did it would mean more work for them (i.e. TAMS via the over worked and under resourced Parks Conservation and Lands Service).

Strange overall when there are beautiful and well maintained areas for the public to enjoy at Bulls Head, Bendora and further along Mt Franklin Rd.

“realignment of the road pavement”

Could be in interesting task in the absence of any paved road.
