In what police have called a “staggering” lack of respect for the law, a 30-year-old Lawson man has had his licence suspended after allegedly blowing almost six times the legal limit.
Police say they first received reports of a vehicle being driving dangerously on Gungahlin Drive at about 4:40 pm on Saturday (26 November).
The vehicle was located shortly afterwards in Lawson and the 30-year-old underwent a roadside breath test which returned a positive result.
The driver was transported to Belconnen Police Station where he underwent a breath analysis which allegedly returned a result of 0.295 – nearly six times the legal limit.
The driver’s ACT licence was immediately suspended for 90 days, and he was issued with a court attendance notice.
Officer in Charge of Road Policing Acting Inspector Ken Williams said he finds incidents like this beyond disappointing.
“To have a driver record nearly six times the legal alcohol limit is staggering,” he said.
“This isn’t an innocent mistake or a slight misjudgement, this is someone making a deliberate decision to treat other people, their own lives, and the laws with contempt.
“What makes this even more frustrating is that we’ve just had the messages about World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, and the festive season is almost upon us. This could so easily have turned into another tragedy on our roads.”
