Stanhope begs transport unions for arbitration

Chief Minister Stanhope is making an appeal to the better natures of the Transport Workers Union and the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union who are busily rendering the bus service in Canberra even more ludicrous.

“Since the bargaining process commenced almost 18 months ago, the Government has made a number of significant concessions in what it was seeking, however the unions have repeatedly refused to budge from their position,” Mr Stanhope said.

“It is a matter of enormous regret to the Government that the AMWU and the TWU have not been prepared to compromise on any of the issues under negotiation as we strive to create a public transport system for the 21st century.

“In order to resolve this, the Government has encouraged the unions to pursue arbitration through Fair Work Australia. However, both unions have repeatedly rejected this offer.

“The Government is now calling on the unions to agree to put the negotiations to an independent arbitrator and be bound by the recommendations of the arbitrator.

“The Government is inviting the unions to put forward the names of three people who could be considered for appointment as the arbitrator and the Government will do likewise with the preferred person agreed on by all parties.

One wonders what an independent arbiter will make of the equally unlovely ACTION management and their workforce.

Interesting point, Holditz, about the useless weekend timetable. It was supposed to have been ‘fixed’ two or more years ago . . .

A bus driver I know told me there were never any issues getting staff to work weekends then – but since the changed routes/times came in, the routes are horrible and long and no one wants to work them.
I can only add that I now spend my weekends driving my kids around, as the weekend bus services are so inadequate.

This situation MUST be resolved soon. It is totally unacceptable to have no public transport services on weekends, especially long weekends.
All parties involved need to come to the table and hammer out a workable agreement to keep the buses running.
ACTION has a long history of disrupting services due to industrial action. ACTION and the ACT Government must be willing to negotiate a fair deal, and unions and employees must be willing to do the same.

Interestingly he hasn’t called them rednecks and phillistines, or something equally offensive.

What is also very interesting is the Greens’ silence. The main reason why the Greens’ proposals for the ACTION Bus System hasn’t been fully implemented (mainly the weekend timetable) is because of the lack of funds. This can only be exacerbated by the current dispute (ie., even less funds.)

Mum, I know I am smart and in the top 10% at school but I have decided i’m not going to go to uni or do a trade as I would like to become a bus driver. I don’t have to spend 4 years in minimum wage and can then still earn 70k+ driving around Canberra. Seems a pretty good deal for a few months training

The scabs, united, will never be defeated!

(Oh, hang on…)

He makes it sound like a 2.5% pay rise is something we should be excited about despite all the other ACT public servants getting a 2.5% raise with no worsening of conditions.
