Stanhope in final plea to Carney

Thumper 11 March 2008 15

In a bizarre turn of events the CT is reporting that Mr Stanhope has made a last minute offer to Raider Todd Carney ahead of a decision on his playing future expected today Mr Stanhope has offered him the chance to be a sporting ambassador for Canberra’s youth if he stays with the Canberra Raiders.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation Andrew Barr also waded in and has urged Carney to remain loyal.

So, Mr Stanhope is happy to reward Carney just to keep him here, even given his long history of misdemenours. And do we need someone like Carney as a sporting ambassor?

Let him go I say, he’s only going to go next year anyway.

This sort of stuff is not what I want my Chief Minister to be concentrating on.

How about a visit to the hospital emergency room Jon?

I think it’s his pure speed that makes him so desirable to other clubs – he sure did run fast last time someone tried to breath-test him…..

This says more about Jon Stanhope than Carney. What planet is he on?

Who the hell cares what some loser footy player does anyway? The guy has done all sorts of stupid crap, and now we want to reward that?? A better example would be set by tossing his arse on the street after the dumb stuff he’s done, maybe then kids would start to understand the concept of consequences.

Perhaps they can put Carney under Hargreaves’ wing – I’m sure they’d work well together.

Contracts actually mean something in the NRL?

Since when?

my sentiments exactly.

Canberra has helped him on many ocassions, in fact, probably kept him out of gaol.

His loyalty is shown in the delay in signing the contract.

Let him go, as I said, he won’t be here next year anyway.

“he’s only going to go next year anyway.”
He’s currently contracted until the end of this season (2008). They are trying to get a extra 4 year contract so he doesn’t go next year.

I’m hoping he shows some loyalty to a club that helped him out over the past 12 months.

Why are the government even getting involved in this issue?

He’s a loser who has broken the law on many occasions. So what if he’s a good player – society too often turns a blind eye to that sort of crap just because a person is talented.

Let him go, good riddance.

This time last year, there was collective dismay at Todd Carney’s behaviour, now theres a collective attempt to keep him in Canberra, I mean make up your mind people.

I think he needs to prove himself as a footballer first, if Manly or the Matthew Elliott coaches Panthers want to spend that much on him, that’s great for them. He is in my mind still not an established 1st Grade Player with elite qualities.

This could start a trend in offering “Ambassadorial” appointments to our more dubious sporting heroes:
Shane Warne as ambassador for Relationships Australian;
Wayne Carey for the Domestic Violence council;
Ben Cousins for the Temperance League;
Andrew Simonds as Ambassador to India;
Sam Newman as special ambassador to the feminists league…

I don’t care what he’s done. He’s a good player, and we should do everything in our power to keep him and protect our investment.

I also thought this offer was odd. What makes anybody think Carney is a role model for anybody, let alone kids. To date, he’s been protected by the Raiders management while they’ve let his lesser talented mates go for offenses similar to the one’s he committed. He’s led a charmed life to date here in the ACT, but I’d like see him go.
