Stanhope says Rogue Traders are "one of the best contemporary bands in the country"

Our Brave Leader has announced the headline act for the Canberra Day concert on 11 March is going to be Rogue Traders.

Fair enough, they’re on a budget after all. But I was struck by this pronouncement from the famed music critic cum Chief Minister:

“It will be a pleasure to welcome one of the best contemporary bands in the country to help us celebrate this important occasion.”

Everyone OK with this assessment?

Possibly more importantly, ABC Kids entertainment jamboree is being wheeled out with “B1, B2, Angelina Ballerina, Postman Pat and Playschool’s George Spartels”.

I like them… but won’t be attending concert…

Roguies ARE “one of the best contemporary bands in the country” and will be popular (with the masses). This doesn’t mean that they are good, for example, like The Whitlams (if memory serves, they will be there too?)…

All in all, not Jon’s WORST mistake, but feel free to add a little cross on your “good/bad” list for later this year if you feel it necessary…

Oh, and will he be granting them $300,000 when they say they can’t make it, ’cause they might go broke? 😉 Actually, I might try that ploy when I want to do something with my classroom next month… “Jon, my classes may not go ahead, because the chairs, desk, resources etc are inadequate, could I have say, $5000?”

Rogue Traders don’t do a lot for me. Iwas going to go to the Aust Day concert featuring them last year but baulked due to lack of interest (and talent) and decided to watch it on TV instead. I thought they were crap “live” on TV, so glad I didn’t go there to see them.

IMHO the Bananas are the headline act.

The ‘My Sharona’ rip off is particularly unbearable . . .

AD, the music industry has been doing that since the 1970s, and while muppets keep buying it, they’ll keep doing it.

yup thumper a horrible trend in australian (globally too) music at the moment… rip off old tunes (badly), add 16ths or four on the floor, grow moppy hair cut, dress pseudo 70’s punk and call it retro.

I bet she knows heaps about stuff.

God i cant stand the rogue traders, all they do is rip off other’s songs and repeat one line through a few verses. I am surprised they haven’t been sued for copyright infringement as yet.

As someone who, in his youth, knew Natalie Bassingthwaite and was in an amateur musical with her, I can report she was quite a sweet young lass at the time (dating a hunky sound guy).

But given that a recent magazine profile failed to mention me, and did mention that she’s gone through a marriage and a divorce, yep, she’s a slapper now.

I bet she’d buck right on if you said “I think Kylie Minogue had a stronger acting talent when she appeared on Ramsay St”

i bet she’d be a real boring root too..

don’t really rate her, prefer my women a little more mysterious…and although I rate how cleverly they raped the music scene with there near copyright breaching riffs and repetitive catchy lyrics.. they are still a crap band

Well would anybody go to see RT without the softcore porn act out the front ?

Maybe she likes a one-night Stan.

Will they actually bring their little drawing card lady this time?
When they played at Academy some time back, they didn’t deem it necessary for the little old bush capital.

i don’t get the attraction to the dirty mole.

I will marry this woman.

If so, she should cover more.

if by “Best” they meant smells like ass, and by “contemporary” they mean useless lack of talent trying to rip of other artists, then the article wuld be correct.

Maybe Raytheon can put on a display of cluster bombing over the lake

The Government already did this, back on July 13, 1997.

love rogue traders. natalie bassingthwaighte is hot.

Maybe Raytheon can put on a display of cluster bombing over the lake – just to liven things up a bit?

Gotta be better than stinkin’ fireworks again.

Weirdly, I enjoyed it last year. Mind you free tickets to below the stage spiced it up, and thirsty merc are excellent. Russell Crowe was a joke, I left the second he opened his mouth.

Perhaps they could program Macca and the Rough Traders back-to-back

I’m sure there will be a c@ck up this 1/2 arsed event at some point.

I see Stanhope watching me watching Stanhope

And now he sees, just want he wants to see

Oh Hasdrubahl, stop it you’re killing me.

I see Stanhope watching me watching Stanhope

Either way the whole thing will be half arsed.

Hasdrubahl, they were already booked to play at Black Mountain Peninsula.

Interestingly, in the media release, they were unable to spell the surname of the lead singer Natalie Bassingthwaighte, opting for ‘Basingthwaite’.

Same deal for the announcement that ‘Macca’ will be broadcasting from Canberra on Australia Day. They went for Ian ‘MacNamara’, rather than Ian’s preferred spelling of ‘McNamara’.

Some fact checking would be nice.

The formatting of the text in Stanhope’s release is all over the shop … a bit like his stance on the international arms trade.

the Rough Traders were unavailable.

I’d really like to know what Stefaniak thinks

I reckon all it really says is Jasmina Jonceski likes the band. She wrote the release.

Or perhaps ole “Hyperbole” Boogs had a hand in it.

Impeach the bastard.
