Stanhopian crusade to name all shady operators

The Canberra Times reports that Chief Minister Stanhope isn’t satisfied with the naming and shaming of sub-standard restaurants, he’d also like doctors and lawyers to get similar treatment:

Jon Stanhope told The Canberra Times yesterday that he believed the paper’s campaign to have filthy eateries publicly identified should be extended to include professional groups that relied on the confidence of the public.

The Chief Minister said he was worried there was too much secrecy surrounding the disciplinary procedures for doctors and lawyers and members of the professions who were serial offenders should be publicly identified. He was prepared to talk to his colleagues, Health Minster Katy Gallagher and Attorney General Simon Corbell, about reforms to the rules for medical and legal professionals.

”I don’t demure from the appropriateness of ensuring that people have some notice of eating establishments that perhaps pose a risk to health welfare and wellbeing,” the Chief Minister said.

”But this does beg that question … should we be thinking of extending that same rationale to other people in whom we place our trust absolutely?”

Personally I’d like to see lawyers who make false claims in bullying letters to trusting non-lawyers to face criminal charges.

What changes would the rest of the hive mind like to see?

The lawyers will offer the doctors up as a last resort (although with a pang, due to the lucrative business of defending incompetent doctors).

Well, while we’re (incorrectly) begging the question, I’d like to question him about how demure he is. He’s always struck me as a fairly substantial bloke.

Anyway, I’m all for adding dud doctors, lawyers and politicians to the list.

I went to a well known family law firm a few years ago, and was quoted about $2500 in advance for their services. I then went to another firm, and was charged about $200 for the same services and received good advice.

You need to be careful, there are sharks in the water.

Hold your horses, there Sonic!.Let’s name and shame restaurants first, because we are not even doing that yet.

If the Chief Minister is for food safety, i will expect this to be implemented in the next few months now he has come out and supported this. Food providers need this “death penalty” over them to get them to put more effort in meeting the standards.

Builders and Building Inspectors. Who did the inspection on the Barton Highway overpass that collapsed? Them – whoever they were.

How interested are you to find out, and why weren’t you one of the people who downloaded the file when it sat on Mediafire?

No point in including MLAs. We elect them knowing well that they will lie to us, make decisions that are not in our interests and generally roger us until the next election.

I don’t know about that. Some MLAs are shadier than others – even if it is because they have more opportunity due to being in government.

If its going to apply to professional groups that rely on the confidence of the public, can our Name & Shame register regularly include the politicians who propose such idea, or do they get something to hide behind, or are they ‘unprofessional’?

Also, I would like to see someone use “beg the question” correctly when providing public comment.
(It doesn’t mean ‘to raise the question’, Mr Stanhope…)

What about naming and shaming substandard local daily newspapers?

I am all for naming shaming sub-standard doctors! There is no lack of them in Canberra

Very true, sadly. It will never happen of course, the law will protect them, but there’s some shockers, lots of very mediocre pad-scribbling pill-slingers, and you can’t get to see the few good ones because everyone else has found out and they’re booked solid (and probably going to die of exhaustion).

With the federal government on a regulation craze, you’d think they could build in some way of bad doctors being reported, assessed and having to do some further training.

I am all for naming shaming sub-standard doctors! There is no lack of them in Canberra, though I only once lodged an official complaint about 2 of them (in the same complaint).
