In 1943, the merchant ship “Iron Knight” was sunk by torpedoes from a Japanese submarine. 36 men died.

Now, armed with cameras, a group of elite divers has found the wreck – 125 metres deep on the ocean floor – off the coast of Bermagui. For the first time, families discover what really happened 63 years ago.

ABC Canberra’s Craig Allen is the reporter/producer of this documentary special. Local ABC camera crew and editor – Mark Moore and Jan Pritchard.
Underwater footage by Samir Alhafith of the Sydney Project.

I wondered why they didn’t use the merchant marine memorial down by the carillion. IMHO it has the best inscription of any memorial in Canberra.

That was a really interesting story, and well done as always.
