Territory And Municipal Services has announced they’re investing $3.5 million to attack the weeds around Canberra.

“Above average rainfall last summer encouraged the spread of a number of invasive weeds, in particular, Blackberry and St John’s Wort,” said Steve Taylor, Senior Invasive Weeds

Officer, Parks and Conservation. “Other highly invasive weeds have also taken advantage of the above average rainfall including African Lovegrass.

“The ACT Government has increased its funding to control these weeds with an additional $2.1 million being allocated to weed management programs than was spent last financial year.”

Mr Taylor said weeds that can spread at a rapid rate are the highest priority for control including Blackberry, St John’s Wort, Broom, African Lovegrass, Serrated Tussock and Chilean Needlegrass.

Sooo any tips for where to get a good picking of blackberries? 😀 Will I die if I just wash them normally and eat them?

I doubt that washing them will make any difference. The poison gets sucked up through their roots. But you can normally easily see when they’ve been sprayed as the poison is coloured orange. And they normally put signs up too.

There used to be a patch on the West side of the lake that was usually left alone. Just cannot remember where exactly.

Blackberry is out of control in the ACT… the forests and river areas have massive infestations. Spraying that won’t do much. They need to burn or bulldoze it, and then spray the new growth.

.

Blackberry infestation is especially bad along the walking tracks adjacent to the Kambah pool area of the Murrumbidgee, a few naturists and hikers have copped a decent pricking whilst searching for a decent picnic/tanning spot.

Like a prick in the bush is going to stop them.

That went so far over your head, I bet you didn’t even hear the ‘whoooosh’.

I believe some of them go to that area specifically looking for a ‘decent pricking’

Sorry I meant that some naturists/hikers have ended up with nasty rashes after a visit to that area of the Murrumbidgee.

Nothing beats a trip into the forests in autumn for blackberry and mushroom picking. I’d recommend it, except with all the spraying these days you need to know what you’re doing.

I wonder when they’re going to do something about Paterson’s Curse… that stuff is everywhere!

African Lovegrass is proving a big problem for surrounding areas, it was actually introduced to Canberra as a desirable grass when Canberra was first being established, now surrounding councils spend a lot of time spraying roadsides to try and control it.

Insert humour module.

Spraying Territory owned land won’t make a lick of difference when there is no one ensuring that the owners of private land are spraying as well. Too many times have I sprayed, only to have seed blow over from the idiots next door and take root for next year.
