ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to the theft of a dog from the RSPCA in Weston on the weekend.

Daisy, a female Maltese Terrier, went missing Sunday afternoon (January 23) from Monash. She was later found and taken to the RSPCA by a member of the public where she was kept overnight.

At 9 am Monday (January 23) morning when Daisy’s owner arrived at the RSCPA to collect her, it was discovered that she had been stolen.

Daisy’s enclosure (after-hours collection cage) had been broken into, with the plastic weather shield and cable ties cut, and the wire mesh pulled back with force to remove Daisy from the cage.

Anyone who may know the whereabouts of Daisy or can assist with the investigation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

Just read on CT that the dog has been reunited with its owners.

Found wandering the streets by a passer by.

That is great news. I was worried that she was stolen for a puppy farm, but didn’t want to say in case the owners read the thread.

She was desexed.

Great to hear she’s been reunited! I wonder what happened. Seems like a lot of effort to for apparently no reason.

Ok..

I’ve figured it out, forensic computer analysis revealed that the dog in question was in fact a hybrid,
this is what it was crossed with, explains everything;

Case closed.

Broke out on its own? Those wires have been cut, look they’re all in a line, with clean cuts. And there’s no way a dog chewed through that reo mesh. Sure would love to know what really happened!

Ok JB, we need a sarcasm button so people can understand what’s going on…

I think it might have actually used Raan Mir Tah and had some assistance by a bear 🙂

So he did break out on his own.

Must have given a big shout of Fus Ro Dah.

I hope this all turns out OK.

I’ve owned dogs all my life, and we now have a beautiful little Maltese terrier who looks pretty much like Daisy, and she is a treasured member of our family.

The idea that someone could deliberately hurt such an innocent creature is abhorrent.

I would be really surprised if this is a random dognapping. More like someone after that particular dog, so owner, family, friend, enemy, estranged partner of owner all strike me as candidates for doing the break in.

I really don’t think the family are involved, given that they are are happy (not estranged) family with a 12 year old who was the owner of the dog and they have all been named, including the suburb they live in.

Would be a bit hard to hide the dog from everyone they know in Canberra who has read the article lol

Using it to train dogs for dog fights maybe? It wont ne much use but can be used to give them a taste for blood. I have heard of this happening.

Since when have there been organised dog fights (and an associated small dog stealing campaign) in Canberra?

Some people here seem to think that Canberra is the wild west…

And by the way I love the above tag, ‘maletese terrier’.

Sounds like an exotic name for a striper.

When you see the prices they (puppy farms and others) are charging for ‘designer’ cross breed mutts, (many of which are based on Maltese), a pedigree moppet must seem like a godsend.

Bait dogs. Unfortunately it does happen, but I wouldn’t think Canberra is much of a dogfighting hot spot. I think it’s much more likely that someone wanted a free cute pet. Maybe they saw her when they went in for a look the previous day.

How do we know the dog didnt force its way out? Looks like an angry ball of muscle.

Perhaps the dog is now an internet sensation:

I wonder if maybe theyre worried about what the RSPCA might charge them to get their dog back .. Im fairly sure in that situation with DAS, there is a fee for their looking after the dog and a few administration charges..

If you see the photos on the link, they went to a hell of a lot of trouble to get the dog out… odd.

I was walking my little dog the other evening and 2 kids tried to grab him. I am petrified that they will come into our yard, although luckily he is an indoor dog. Has anyone heard of this happening in Canberra?

Sadly, this is probably the case. Dog fighting is still a cultural thing (like bullfighting) in a lot of countries and unfortunately people from these countries have migrated to Australia.

Probably on boats

Why would anyone go to such lengths?
(puts on Humphrey Bogart voice)
“It’s the, uh, stuff that dreams are made of.”

Hopefully someone just really wanted a Maltese terrier. I’m not defending their stealing her, but it’s a happier thought than some of the alternatives.

Custody dispute?

I seriously don’t get this….
