Still no carpet in the Canberra Theatre

I can’t help but notice that this is what the floor of the Canberra Theatre still looks like:

And I can’t help but notice that the Civic Library remains closed. Furthermore the storm that caused the damage hit on 27 February. This being the start of May one has to wonder just how long it takes to get carpet replaced? Or a reduced service operating in the newly built library?

Is this a sign of the efficiency of our Government? Has their been a problem with the insurance? Or is this just as good as it gets in this town?

I wonder how much that fancy carpet cost in comparison with the paltry amount spent on books?

Dear Johnboy,

Thank you for your comments on the Canberra Theatre Link floor and the Civic Library.

These facilities are managed by the Cultural Facilities Corporation and are fully insured. Staff were on site throughout the night of the storm reducing the damage and starting to rectify the problems.
A full report on the damage has been undertaken by expert consulting engineers, work on repair is underway and the carpet has been ordered. There are no warehouses in Australia that keep 3200 sq metres of this type of carpet and so manufacture has taken six weeks. The feature carpet in the Civic Library has to be specially woven due to the feature design. The carpet is expected to be laid at the end of May in both the Civic Library and the Link. While the Link is still operating, the Civic Library is closed as the book stock was also removed to protect it from potential damage due to high moisture levels. Also, where do you store the books when you have to pull up the carpet ? 50,000 books have been safely stored off-site.
If you have any further questions, please call the Canberra Theatre Centre Director. 62435711.

I heard the carpet for the theatre has to be specially woven.

Ainslie Arts Centre is still closed leaving most of the community muscians in Canberra displaced.

Could someone please bang the cymbal at the end of the tunnel? It happened on the 27th February!

Going to be a quiet winter at this rate.

The ANU library’s website says that the 4th floor will be opening soon.

And yet the library is still open.

The tope floor of the Chifley library at the ANU is still closed..

poorly purchased insurance then.

There’s an entire floor of a govt building in town still closed. Also, a few stores still seem to have dud flooring.

I know of people still waiting on insurance money, or painting to be done (under insurance) from New Years Eve. DJs in civic still has concrete/glue as the floor too.

Fed govt buildings seemed to get fixed quick smart though. As did the childcare centre in Turner. The library is not ‘losing money’ that insurance would ahve to pay on, so no rush I guess.

Ahhh, yuck.

Oh, that’s glue, not timber ralph.

But serious buildings run by serious people pay what needs to be paid to get the work done.

The ACT Government would seem to not be serious.

My guess is that it’s as much a problem of getting people to do the work – if the skills shortage in this town is as bad as is often made out, a single storm like that requiring a lot of buildings being fixed would no doubt stretch/delay things even further.

Rustic.

Doesn’t look too bad actually. A bit of lacquer and it would come up good.
