Still no reduction in speeding or drink driving

Police issued a traffic infringement notice to a speeding driver travelling 55km/h over the speed limit along Adelaide Ave, Deakin late last night (17 February).

ACT Policing Traffic Operations members were conducting speed checks along Adelaide Ave, and checked the speed of a Ford Typhoon utility. The utility was detected travelling at 135km/h in the 80km/h zone. The driver who has only held a full class licence for less than three weeks was issued an $1811.00 infringement notice and deducted six demerit points.

In another incident, a 25-year-old man will be summonsed to court to face a drink-driving charge.

Around 12:15am this morning (18 February) police observed a white Ford Falcon XR8 travelling at excessive speed along Sulwood Drive, Kambah. Police conducted a speed check and recorded the Ford Falcon travelling at 128km/h in the 80km/h zone. The male driver was spoken to by police and underwent a roadside screening test which provided a positive result.
The driver was conveyed to the Woden Police Station where he underwent a breath analysis and recorded a reading of 0.133 grams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

Traffic Operations Superintendent Mark Colbran said that the actions of these individuals are a great concern, and urges people not to drink and drive and speed.

“ACT Policing continuously warns people not to drink-drive and speed. That message does not seem to be registering with a small minority. Drink-driving is a community issue and until the community gets serious and remembers that it is a crime to drink-drive, ACT Policing will continue to apprehend and put intoxicated drivers before the court”.

The man had his licence immediately suspended and he will be summonsed to appear before the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.

What’s “speeding” anyway? Going just a little bit over?? Come on, some of the speed limits are really low and really easy to go over, then you’re a naughty little boy or girl for accidentally straying one or 2 ks over, and bang, you’re booked.

Bollocks. Show me anyone in Canberra who has been booked for going 1 or 2 kms over the speed limit – doesn’t happen. In the ACT there is a quite generous tolerance normally applied.

Like I said before…… Take their cars of them.

As has been said before, this works if theyre driving their own car, otherwise you just penalise the innocent.

…Jon Stanhope, the ACT Government and Police Media are constantly harping about people speeding, accusing EVERYONE of doing it, because of a small minority who race through Canberra’s roads and streets.

To be fair, the only drivers the police have contact with, are the ones who speed. Its perfectly understandable why they make the assumption that everyone is a criminal, when the majority of people that they interact with are ‘criminals’.

Its like Im sure the RSPCA make similar statements about how the community needs to stop mis-treating animals, but simply because they spend all day helping a few mis-treated animals, it doesnt mean that the whole community is mis-treating them.

And what will happen with these people anyway, they’ll get given a fine (that they’ll probably choose not to pay, or setup a $10/week payment plan), maybe lose their licence for a few months, so the only outcome is that we now get one more unlicened driver on the road, who has lost 10 bucks petrol money.

How does anyone win in this situation, other than the guy who gets caught who gets a slap on the wrist?

I think there must be a direct relationship between people owning top of the range or high powered falcons, commodores or a motorcycle and the small size of the driver’s brain and penis.

Perhaps people should STOP SPEEDING then. FFS, how hard is it to stay under the speed limit? This month’s speeding blitz has netted about four times the offenders as the same period last year (and the year before). I don’t want to get into the same old argument again, but it really is this simple: If you choose to speed, then you run the risk of fines, points on your licence.

Despite this frequent media releases, people are still getting caught at a rate of about 400/week. And as mentioned already, no one has accused EVERYONE of speeding; that’s a ridiculous comment.

If they weren’t accusing EVERYONE then why the hell are they constantly ranting and raving to the media where everyone (or at least the widest audience) have to hear them??!! They could instead accuse the ones who are actually doing it, by pulling them over and saying so and showing them the reading on the radar gun.

Also, I don’t like the way they talk down on everyone, lecturing us all like naughty little children, when they do these press statements. Save that for the TRUE idiots, the minority who really do pose a risk to the public.

They should be going after the ones that pose the real danger — the ones that race through the streets.

Also have you ever given one thought as to why there are soooo many different speed zones around these days?????

There will always be the occasional idiot who speeds massively over the limit. These people are the ones we should be targeting for major penalties.

“Drink-driving is a community issue and until the community gets serious and remembers that it is a crime to drink-drive…”

It’s all very well to say that the community should get serious about drunk drivers, but how are we expected to demonstrate our seriousness? This section of the community (ie me) has been seriously pissed off at arsehat drunk drivers for a very long time, and would dearly love the opportunity to express my little tiny portion of overall community displeasure at these murderous swine.

If only there was a place where these people were tied up so that I could shout abuse at them and throw shit in their faces….

And fair dinkum, a boofhead kid who’s had a licence for 3 weeks driving a bloody typhoon ute? Ridiculous.

I think part of the Community Issue meaning is that these speeders/drinkdrivers are part of or Community. They have friends, family, work mates, neighbours etc who all KNOW these people are speeding/drinkdriving but don’t appear to be doing much to stop them or report them.
Obviously not YOUR issue if you do not know of anyone who does these things, but someone in the Community does know them.

……….Daily press releases? Maybe I’ve missed five or six, but I thought they were weekly.

You know what I mean. Every other day, every SINGLE week, or otherwise on a highly frequent and ongoing basis, Jon Stanhope, the ACT Government and Police Media are constantly harping about people speeding, accusing EVERYONE of doing it, because of a small minority who race through Canberra’s roads and streets.

Oh, please. Can you point to anywhere that Jon Stanhope, the ACT Government or the police media have accused EVERYONE of speeding? No really, show me where, please.

A month-long “blitz on speeding”…..

…..Daily press releases ranting on about the high-range speeding infringements they have issued…..

The ACT Policing Media Unit are harping on a bit these days more than average aren’t they?

I can understand though about the drink-driving, why people to continue to DUI is beyond me…..
