ACT Policing detectives have begun the lengthy process of cataloguing what is suspected to be one of the largest seizures of stolen property ever in the ACT.

The property was found after police conducted a search warrant on a house in south Canberra this morning (4 July).

Criminal Investigations members executed the warrant around 11:30am, and found every room in the house filled with property. In some cases, rooms were filled from floor to ceiling with items.

Sergeant John Giles said that in all his experience as a police officer he has never been involved in a search warrant in which so much property has been located.

“The amount of property involved makes the mind boggle; and I envisage that we will be cataloguing property for many days to come”.

“At this time police are unable to put an accurate financial figure of how much property there is, but we cautiously estimated over $800,000 worth of stolen property is inside the premise,” Sergeant Giles said.

Seized items include books, CDs, DVDs, clothing, stationery, computer hard drives and software. Police believe the items have been shoplifted from stores around Canberra over a period of several years

I always bring home the soaps/shampoos when I stay in hotels.

Most stores insure against shoplifting. So it comes out of the prices paid by everyone.

Ah, the defensive slogan of every shoplifter. 😉

A friend of mine uses the term “factored-in” ( talking about Shampoo, conditioner, soap, pens etc at hotels)… same deal, I guess… at least, in their minds…

Soaps and shampoos and all that get thrown out after you stay in a hotel, they cannot legally let someone else use those products if there’s a chance they could have been tampered with.

The woman has already been busted for doing this, a few years ago. Something like three trucks were needed to remove the stolen goods.

How do you know?

It was in the news then, and someone I know lives near by and had a good view of the goings on, so it stuck in the mind.

According to the article in this morning’s CT, after being bailed last time she returned to her house while the police were still cataloguing the property and was caught tampering with evidence boxes. Nice one. For numerous reasons this time they decided against bail.

I worked at a supermarket that had 2 pallets of grog returned (from one garage of a klepto) because at the time we were the only one using a particular type of security device. (the thief was using a lead lined pouch in a jacket to stop the devices setting off the beepers).

But how do you fit the pallet into the pocket? Or were they just that much of a frequent flyer?

Perhaps he did it one can at a time, or perhaps the device was attached pallet and only had to be covered. What ever the device was easily disabled and failed its supposed function.

You just can’t fix stupid.

When I worked at Bunnings many years ago, we had some bloke (one of a well known group of three), try to walk out with a large Sidchrome set down each leg of his trackies… Another time, I closely trailed a known offender through the store. At one point, he mumbled “why do I get the feeling I’m being followed?”. I responded – “probably because you are”… he left immediately…

I wonder how much gear walked out the doors considering how often we caught people… those caught must only be the tip of the iceberg, surely… pricks…

Re the books – can’t return them if the local bookshop went bust in part due to her.

What kind of sick freak installs a brown toilet?

And on seeing 100 pirate ship over the horizon the captain shouted “Bring me my brown pants!!”

Although I don’t see any pirates in this incident… otherwise it would have been just a photo of several external HDD or NAS.

If the ‘owners’ can be found then it goes back to them.

Easier if the shop has their own labels on the items but if they are just using the standard barcode then it is a bit harder to track back.

There’s a nice little windfall for consolidated revenue when this lots gets auctioned off.

I wonder if my TV remote is in there…………?

If you own a shop, it may be.

It’s amazing that one person could shoplift that many goods in only a couple of years! It must be a full-time job. And obviously one that is not earning them much if any money, since they’re not even selling the stuff.

I wonder if my TV remote is in there…………?
