UC Live! has announced what they’ve got planned for Stone Day this year.

Entering its 44th year of awesome parties of all shapes and sizes to commemorate the laying of the University of Canberra’s Foundation Stone, Stone Day is here to stay, and is singing a brand new tune and rocking a fresh new look in 2012. Bringing with it all the fun, festivities and atmosphere of the carnival, Stone Day 2012 boasts the theme ’Carnie Party’, and will be held on Friday 26 October 2012 in and around Zierholz @ UC over four stages: THE ZIERHOLZ STAGE, THE SILENT PARTY, THE BALLY and THE CAR PARK CARNIVAL, ensuring there won’t be a corner of Stone Day 2012 that isn’t abuzz with party vibes.

THE ZIERHOLZ STAGE will play host to some of Australia’s liveliest and most exciting acts in SAN CISCO, ALISON WONDERLAND, SKRYPTCHA, THE GRISWOLDS, SUPER BEST FRIENDS, TIN CAN RADIO, BEARS WITH GUNS, READABLE GRAFFITI and National Campus Band Competition winners DAHRNOIR.

Please correct me if I’m wrong here but I get the feeling that a good portion of the disappointment is related to people being unfamiliar with the lineup.

I think it’s kinda funny (actually it’s kinda sad) that people seem to hang on to memories of their last favorite lineup and then judge each new year by comparing the two. To me, the whingeing clearly demonstrates the difference between pretenders, and real fans of music – be it live or recorded. Just because the lineup doesn’t consist mainly of safe and already proven international megastars, it doesn’t mean it’s not going to be any good in my opinion.

I think life could be so much more interesting for people if they chose to experience music by hearing it from a source other than a mainstream outlet. Being adventurous is fun. And quite often rewarding. For me, a big part of what a festival is about, is wondering around and discovering new music that I’d otherwise not had the chance to discover.

This was so much better when it was actually StoneFest.

This cheap imitation is cheap.

First sign of age: ‘it was so much better when…’

They must’ve been stoned off their faces when they decided to rename it Stone Day!

Wow you are old.

Hipsters will never actually dance at any of these things, they go there, not enjoy it and spend the entire time on their Iphones posting facebook status updates about how awesome it is.

I play a couple of Gibson’s, but damned if that ain’t a sweet looking Rickenbacker. If only they’re change that clunky headstock…

It was much better still back when it was Stone’s Eve and then Stone Day the next day.

“Oh, yes! I suppose things were pretty marvellous in ‘the good old days’. Four year old kiddies digging coal! Three year old kiddies……. er, digging coal as well as the four year old kiddies. I suppose you think that was the limit, don’t you? Well I’ve got news for you. I think old people are really boring. And the only reason you don’t understand our music is because you don’t like it! ”
🙂

You forgot to add that the music is too loud for us 🙂

As an old fogie, I’m happy it’s back to Stone Day again – Stone Fest struck me as an awfully try hard name. Also reckon that $25 is a pretty good price for student tickets, whoever the bands are.

But then, I’m happy as long as people respect the Stone with heavy drinking, etc, and no one brings doom upon us all by angering the Stone Fairy.

I belong the old fogie ranks also, and I actually can’t remember paying anything at all to see bands on Stone eve/Stone day, plus it was Stone week with parties kicking off in ressies on the monday night….Agreed- $25 is good value.

Same from me. UC during the 90’s was a riot.

Canberra…where music goes to die.

I’m with the old folks that say it was better back in the day. At a smidge under 40, I’d still get out there if it was a good lineup, but that one… big meh. maybe it isn’t for the likes of me, and I am too old and should stay home, but if they want people to come, then there needs to be some appeal to people that actually have money. Even BDO and Homebake this summer appeal to gen x’ers that still think they are in their 20’s.

The young folk just care about getting munted and slam dancing.

wait, that’s not much different to back then.

disregard.

Also, this is about Stone Day (FEST) not every gig/event/festival held in the A.C.T.

Keep it in perspective, buddy.

How very Canberran of you, you are the reason why we can’t have nice things. A lot of people in this town put a whole heap of time, effort and money into putting on gigs, only to have them not supported by the same group of people who whinge that there is never anything on in Canberra (Canberrans as a whole). Stonefest was great, but the numbers don’t add up anymore so they have adapted and are moving forward, you should go and have a magical time, maybe it’ll put a smile on your grumpy dial.

Hit a nerve.

The previous format of Friday/Saturday night was always close to, if not sold out weeks before the event, with some Major national and international headliners.

New management came in, they thought they’d tweak it by only having it held on a Saturday, only one stage (and a silent disco) with sub-par acts no one really wanted to see, but still attempted to show their support. The last decent line-up was Does it Offend You, Yeah, Pendulum, Bliss n Eso and I think The Living End.

It’s fine though, and with the pathetic offerings again this year, people will be happy to attend Parklife in Sydney a few weeks later, and All Our Friends (to the UCLives credit, a decent event each year).

Can I claim an aged pension at 20 years of age because I’ve heard of none of these bands.

It might be for the best. You never seem to have heard of anything.

At some point it becomes obvious where the fault lies.

I’m awfully sorry if I am not terribly enthused by The Indie McDancebeat LightFolk VonMorrisey Haircut Trios #3567-3578, I really am.

San Cisco is the headline act? This is the worst lineup for a ‘festival’ ever. Ever! They’d be better off advertising this on a much smaller scale, instead of trying to pass it off as music festival.

I feel kinda sorry for the organisers of Stonefest/Stone Day, it seems like they’ve been muscled out by the existing music festivals in Canberra. It’s a shame.
