Stonefest 2011 slimming down

By johnboy - 6 October 2011 14

stonefest

BMA have a story on plans to reduce the scope of Stonefest at UC this year:

A new event will be held this year, which will see Stonefest return to its roots as a festival held to celebrate the unveiling of the University’s foundation stone in 1968. The Stonefest ‘Rock On’ party will be held in the UC Refectory and on the UC Concourse and will feature some of the nation’s best dance and hip hop artists.

“Stonefest is not attracting as many people as seen in previous years, and we feel we cannot continue with the 2011 festival in its current format,” director of Campus Life Peter Dahl said.

Ticket holders who purchased Stonefest 2011 tickets via credit card will receive an automatic refund to their card. Those that purchased with cash or EFTPOS should return to their point of purchase with photo identification to obtain a refund.

The new lineup is:

    — The Aston Shuffle
    — Illy
    — Tonite Only
    — Flight Facilities
    — Sampology (AV/DJ set)
    — Diafrix
    — The Hump Day Project
    — Dept. of Defiance
    — Strangeways DJs,
    — Jemist,
    — Pang! DJs,
    — Architect DJs,
    — PARTY BY JAKE DJs,
    — Swim Team DJs,
    — MUM DJs & M.I.T.

What StonedFest needs is a good dose of some hot stratocaster blues ala Jimi.

That will bring ’em back in.

Too many bands there with “DJ” in their name for my liking.

I like old cars with running boards, but that doesn’t mean a new car should have them. Get with the times. Music has moved on.

I used to like it back in the mid 90’s when I was a student at UC. Back then it was a party and chill out day for the students (although, inevitably, the lads and I were still finishing off some assignment or other).

Late 80’s/early 90’s it used to be Stone week culminating in a non-stop Friday, full of bands and I only remember paying to watch the headline act on the Friday night (Hoodoo Gurus, Choirboys, Baby Animals)..Thursday thru to Friday night was 24 hours of bands back to back..I think even the recovery brekkie was free in the refec…Ahhh..those were the days..

i saw an ad tonight at SCC woden for an upcoming angels gig, but with the guy who was lead singer of the screaming jets as lead. (his name escapes me momentarily, dave someone?)

i cannot abide by these old bands trying to keep going or coming back after saying they are done (yes you cold chisel). its seems so…. forced. lame? i dunno. Go out when you are not totally laughable and stay out.

Brindabella for President. I’m a (very bad) guitarist, and I’d rather listen to recordings of Jimi over the telephone than any of these “DJ” losers live.

I’ve heard Doc Neeson might be coming to town. If it’s true, I’ll be there.

Although maybe if i wear a hot pink singlet and those stupid white sandshoes….

See that is who I thought was the main demographic who attended music festivals…

Also, the Stonefest logo seems to be in the same font as the video game ‘RockBand’ weird.

i was really disappointed that I was going to miss stonefest this year (double booked myself) but now I dont feel so bad! yay!

it was a kick arse lineup… much better than homebake this year, which I’ve noticed hasnt sold out yet and usually does.

I wonder how this new one on NYE will fare? I’d give it a go if I was a young spring chicken who could tolerate drunken teenagers on NYE.

i agree entirely – i have been less inetersted in attnding each year beacuse of the increasing amount of “DJ (insert pun)” appearing on the list.

One year they had the Living End, the Datsuns and the Von Bondies all on the lineup (all rock) and it was great! The DJ elctronic music area was upstairs and was less popular.

I guess it could just be me getting older and losing touch with the youth.

Although maybe if i wear a hot pink singlet and those stupid white sandshoes….

Well, perhaps if they hadn’t changed the festival from a 2 day, multi-staged event into a pathetic little 1 day, 1 stage festival, it’d still be something to attend.

It was changed from a 2 day event to a 1 day event for exactly the same reason they’ve downsized it again, lack of people attending which meant it would have lost them a lot of money. It doesn’t sound like making it a one day event is the main problem..

Um, I’m not sure this is right. Stonefest was getting bigger and bigger every year until some brightspark thought it was a great idea to get rid of the friday night, which is whatever came for, then chilled out saturday during the day. They wrecked the unique format and just turned it into something which resembled every other festival. Groovin the Moo was the final nail in the coffin for Stonefest showing you can get that amount of people to a Canberra festival if it’s organised by the right people.

I applaud the organisers for dealing so well with the hand they were dealt. Obviously no one was coming, and I thought they had a great line up, particularly given how hard it can be getting big acts to Canberra.

Putting on another gig keeps the music going, refunding punters directly is obviously the right thing to do and I’m sure they’ll be back with another great festival in the future.

At the same time, they didn’t do themselves any favours with a deplorable website, which surprised my because I would’ve thought there’d be UC kids falling over themselves to make one.

Very disappointing, albeit unsurprising, news. Always seemed a bit crazy for a university to hold a festival so close to exams, but I still loved every year I went.
