A 30-year-old man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Friday, March 25) following a pursuit with police yesterday afternoon through Belconnen.

About 6.50pm last night Belconnen Police Station members observed a white Ford Laser that had been reported stolen earlier in the day on Ginninderra Drive near Flynn.

Police activated lights and sirens to indicate the driver to pull over. The driver has not complied and accelerated away. A pursuit ensued along Kingsford Smith Drive and onto William Hovell Drive, with speeds reaching up to 130km/h in the 90km/h zone. Police attempted to deploy stop sticks however, these were unsuccessful.

The driver of the Laser was apprehended after failing to negotiate a corner, coming to rest on the nature strip at the corner of William Hovell Drive and Bindubi Street, near Aranda.

The man was arrested and taken to the ACT Watch House. He has been charged with driving a motor vehicle without consent, unlicensed driving, dangerous driving and not stopping when directed to by police.

So it was reported stolen on Ginninderra Drive?

If they’re hard to deploy effectively in the circumstances they’re designed for that’s bad design for mine.

I would agree with that. Police here should be allowed to do PITT stops but that’s never going to happen, so stop sticks, being (just) better than nothing, will continue to be used.

Not lately, but they seem to be deployed to little effect more often than not, at least in the media releases.

It’s not the stop sticks failing, it is that they are bloody difficult to deploy effectively, under large stress, when the target vehicle can and will drive in whatever manner it likes to avoid the section of the road covered by the strip. Including by driving at the Police officer trying to deploy them!

Saw a video circulating the other day of a US copper attempting to successfully deploy stop sticks and getting cleaned up by the offender avoiding them. Nasty outcome.

The first sentence of the media release doesn’t even say who was chasing who! Was the Laser-driver chasing the cops???

MHW

I think the crook was chasing the cops, just to be different.

Perhaps they should try deploying them on the road, rather than in the media releases?

MHW

I don’t get the headline. Has there been a spate of failing stop sticks?

Too close to home for me that, I hope he tops himself soon.

Police attempted to deploy stop sticks however, these were unsuccessful.

Damn police media writers.

The deployment was not merely attempted, if they were actually deployed.
That the stop sticks were ineffective once deployed is a different matter, its likely an equipment failure or a training issue.

“following a pursuit with police yesterday” – following a pursuit by police yesterday??

“The driver has not complied” – The driver did not comply .. ??

“ACT Policing” must ‘has’ taken a day off and another challenged individual ‘have’ the job of press releases on said day.

Bugger any substantive comment the grammar ‘are’ driving me mad!

*yawn*. So what are you doing to stamp out crime? Are you out rescuing all those victims suffering out there??? There is a good dollar in victim-hood I hear!!zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

From reading your resonse, I’m not being ignorant about the problem.

So who did the accused ‘attempt to murder’? Please refer to the law in your answer.

That’s the whole point, there are no laws anymore, not for twats such as this one. You may as well charge the skidmark with attempted murder and still nothing will come of it because he will be a reformed whatever or has an Aunty that can vouch for him.

This is the ACT, its ‘attempted manslaughter’. Driving down Kingsford Smith Dr at 130km/hr at 6pm, it might not be attempted murder, but its reckless driving with a very real possibility of someone being killed. This isnt some kid driving down an isolated highway at 3 in the morning, this was on a major arterial road at the tail end of peak hour and there was obvious disregard for the lives of other drivers on the road.

Wow, I hope if you are ever selected for jury duty you request to be excused for having a manifestly unsuitable understanding of the law.

What law???

colourful sydney racing identity said :

Nod difference between the offence? You would equate stealing bread from Woolworths with assault?

Punishment SHOULD fit the crime, not these types getting off with a smack on the wrist – bit tired of scum getting away with this and victims of crime suffering.

Nah, I would suggest is probably just sick of the law not doing what it is supposed to do …… stop people continually breaking the law and putting innocent, good law abiding citizens lives and property at risk.

I am a fan of the 3 chances rule. Convicted of the same offence 3 times and your Gooooooooooone !!!!!!

Off to Jail you go, do not pass and go, do not collect $200 ……….

And??? Twats like this are let off all charges with a “don’t do it again” from the courts. Next he’ll be stealing another car, get involved in another police chase and crash into some innocents and kill them, where he’ll be sent to court AGAIN only to be told AGAIN: “don’t do it again” – if he lives (here comes another Mully).
Why not charge this scum with at least attempted murder??? Yeah,my bad, I forgot about the civil liberty crap and the criminal having all the rights.
