The ACT State Emergency Service (ACTSES) is urging the community to consider the weather before heading out for Australia Day festivities in the coming hours.

The Bureau of Meteorology had issued a warn in for severe stirms in the ACT and surrounding region over the next several hours producing damaging winds and large hailstones.

ACTSES units are on standby to respond to calls for help from the public if required but residents should undertake the following actions to be prepared:

o Shelter pets and animals;
o Shelter vehicles or cover with blankets to minimise damage;
o Disconnect electrical appliances from the power; and
o Keep a list of emergency numbers handy.

The ACTSES also urges the community to monitor conditions when storms are forecast via the ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) website www.esa.act.gov.au ESA Twitter and Facebook accounts, Canberra Connect Call Centre on 13 22 81 and the Bureau of Meteorology website http://www.bom.gov.au/act/

Groan – just caught an ACT Government representative on the ABC radio news promising the Queensland flood victims “media representatives” by way of help, via the Queensland Government. Not brawn, not sandbagging, not mop and bucket action. As if to underline the misperception of Canberra amongst Queenslanders. How embarrassing!

You may want to reread the article.

We’re on standby to help with rescues, sandbagging, clean-up, etc. Exactlyas we did two years ago when the place was last flattened.

Now Thumper—that wouldn’t suit Masquara’s unerring anti-ALP spin would it? ;-/

Groan.
Please take some time to read even the first paragraph.

I photographed a timelapse of the storm build-up over almost 2.5 hours this afternoon:
http://alankerlin.blogspot.com.au/2013/01/before-canberra-storm-was-build-up-my.html

🙂 Nice work!

What did you use to film it and make the time lapse video?

Cheers. I have a Canon EOS 600D. I set it to only A4 JPG resolution because I don’t keep the files, to fit more on a card, to make saving, transferring and processing faster. Flipside is that if you want to keep/use a single frame they aren’t much chop. That’s why I’m picking up a second camera next week…

Get the focus right and flip it to manual so it won’t keep changing. Manual everything on the other settings and take shots until you get the balance right. Start with medium f-stop to get a wider field of view then twiddle. (You can see I had the exposure a bit low for the first sequence and it got darker than I realised.) Try to keep the shutter speed fairly quick because the camera will be buffeted by winds. Anchor tripod with weighted camera bag hanging off the hook—don’t want it all blowing off the roof!

Then program the remote. I have a Hanhnel Giga T Pro II. Stupid name but best $100 I’ve spent on photo gear. Use it maybe 50% of all uses. I had shots every 4 seconds this time. 1840-odd frames taken.

Transfer into Picasa application, select the frames, select Create Video, add audio track and title frame, set to process and go away for a while. Upload to YouTube from within Picasa—it already knows your Google account. And that’s it.

The hardest thing about it is not interrupting a sequence to use the camera for shooting other things happening at the same time! Hence camera #2.

I use the same process (without the Picasa bit and with RAW files and longer exposures) to take lightning photos like these:
http://alankerlin.blogspot.com.au/2013/01/after-38-degree-day-comes-cracker-storm.html

🙂 Thanks for that! I’ll have to give it a go – I didn’t know that Picasa would create movies from still sets. Damn good.

Great lightning pics, btw!

Sturm und Drang?

‘had issued a warn in for severe stirms in the ACT’

If anyone from the ESA is reading this may i suggest something called ‘proofreading’!!

Calvary Hospital lost all power, both main and auxiliary, for about 30 minutes during the storm.

*snip*

But the hospital came close to declaring a “code yellow”, or an internal disaster, after the auxiliary power failed to kick in automatically.

A hospital spokesman said the issue was being rectified, and was caused by the abnormal and incredible amount of rain.

WTF?

1. When all power goes out (including back up generators! WTF!), I thought the hospital was mandated to declare code yellow. Not ‘almost’ declare it.

2. The backup generator is there to work in ALL conditions. Especially when we receive an ‘abnormal and incredible’ amount of rain. This really is a monumental f*&k up.

3. The public deserves an better explanation given the seriousness of the incident. But even if Katy does provide the public with an explanation, would you be able to believe a single word she says ??? She is a professional BS artist of the highest callibre.

There is a female black lab listed on on DAS found listings in Flynn.

The storm will have sent many dogs running – hope they all make it home safely

Does this mean no more fire bans?

I was out the back yard filming lightning when I captured the beginnings of a mini tornado. Thankfully it fizzled out before long. I just got power back on now so will sort through the footage to see if it was worthy of “Storm Chasers”. Somehow though, I doubt it.

On the off chance someone comes across a black Labrador, she went missing from a friends workshop during the storms in Oatley Court, Belconnen. .. We’ve been driving around the area for a few hours but cannot find her. She’s tagged, so drop her to a vet or something or call me on 0412 582 682

Meanwhile out in Macgregor, we’re without power, and have been for a few hours now. Feeling for the people who have to be out in this trying to get everything up and running again!

But out in Tuggers it belted down around 6.30 .. Full marks to the Met mob. 62 mills at the Monash recording thingo.

Isabella Lake had flooded very picturesquely when I was out around 7pm. And I think a fair chunk of the construction site on Drumston was washing onto Isabella Drive.

From the Canberra Times:

Calvary Hospital lost all power, both main and auxiliary, for about 30 minutes during the storm.

No patients were affected and no operations were being conducted during the storm.

But the hospital came close to declaring a “code yellow”, or an internal disaster, after the auxiliary power failed to kick in automatically.

A hospital spokesman said the issue was being rectified, and was caused by the abnormal and incredible amount of rain.

WTF?

Not completely sure what wildturk is on about. He may have luckily kicked off a little earlier than me. But out in Tuggers it belted down around 6.30 .. Full marks to the Met mob. 62 mills at the Monash recording thingo.

Well, the frogs, along with those crickets that haven’t drowned, are giving me a nice concert while I sip a beer on the verandah. Straya.

Comic_and_Gamer_Nerd6:54 pm 26 Jan 13

Just got back from driving through that mess.

Insane.

Traffic lights are out on hindmarsh drive near holder.

…and they were right !

As long as it doesn’t effect the Hottest 100 broadcast, I’ll be happy.

Feeling for a few mates in Central Qld who are really being battered by the weather.

I take this to mean that Shane Warne’s popularity is going to increase this afternoon, whilst he farts hard and picks up his bowling pace?
If that left you perplexed, look up the origin of the word stirm, and if it still leaves you bamboozled I think I’ve had too much Straya day cheer.
