Simon Corbell has let us know of more works from the Place Name Committee:
“Aviation inventor, the late Dr David Warren AO, will be acknowledged with the naming of “David Warren Road” in Hume, while “Ian Nicol Street” in Watson, recognises the work of the late ACT Barrister, Ian Nicol AM,” Mr Corbell said.
Dr Warren served as principal research scientist at the Aeronautical Research Laboratories in Melbourne from 1952 to 1983. He and his team designed and constructed the world’s first flight-data recorder prototype in 1956; this device became known as the “black box”.
Dr Warren was made an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2002 for his services to the aviation industry. Dr Warren passed away in July 2010.
“The road provides access to the Emergency Services Agency Training Centre and helicopter base in Hume which is a fitting acknowledgement of the service to the aviation industry by Dr Warren,” Mr Corbell said.
“The road named in Mr Nicol?s honour is located within the new development in Watson “The Fair” and will align with the overall placename theme in Watson of judges and members of the legal profession.
